Hi, I'd appreciate it if anyone could please point me in the direction of insurers who offer policies for independent travellers. I am planning a few trips to Europe this year and would like to ensure I get an appropriate policy that covers indirect losses as I wont be using a travel agent to book the trips. I tried Googling Independent travellers insurance but without much luck and would like to compare a few companies so I'd appreciate some help in narrowing the search field.

    Thanks in advance.

We are travelling as a family to Europe soon but my son is over 18 and therefore prevents us from getting Family insurance. Is it best to get single trip or annual insurance? Having made that decision is it best to get family policy for me and better half and separate policy for son or 3 single policies. I checked single policy for my details on Moneysupermarket and it appears 2 @ single policy (Assuming wife gets same quote) will be cheaper than Family policy covering us both. Am I missing something here?

One benefit I can see with individual policies is that we could go on various trips during year without the other two family members and be covered but does it affect anything if we are all on holiday together. EG - How would we stand for claiming for a suitcase with clothes for each of us in it and who would claim for the suitcase?

If this has been asked before - I apologise but a quick search on this thread did not turn up anyuseful info. Life was so much easier when the children were under 18:o

Any information to widen my knowledge would be gratefully received.

Is your son in full time education and whats his age?
  • Indirect losses are those not directly attributable to an Insured event. for example, if you were to lose your camera in an Insured way, an indirect loss would be the flowers you have to buy your missus to make up for losing her precious pictures of the little one taking her first steps. (apologies if I sound facetious, but it's the best i can come up with at this time of night). A similar thing would be the cost of buying sweets and magazines whilst waiting for someone to be seen at the doctor's.

If your son is 18, he's probably not bothered how you insure him. However, a lot of annual travel isn't really ideal for the average 18 year old's travels - backpacking, surfing, skiing, bungee jumping, etc. Best to check whether he's going anywhere else this year without you before buying a policy.

Irrespective of who submits a claim for stuff in a suitcase, the excess is applied per person - if 3 people had property in a case, three excesses would be applied. With 3 separate policies, 3 linked claims would have to be made - much easier to put each person's stuff in their own case. Trust me - it would only make things more complicated for you.

I would be inclined towards the 3 individual policies. Just for ease of use (like you said, you can use it without the others) and if it's cheaper - all the better.

Other than that, try an independent broker for advice - going direct is all very well when you know exactly what you want, but someone who knows the trade is very useful.

By the way, nobody who makes a claim regrets buying the excess waiver, but plenty who don't end up regretting it. I always recommended it to older people travelling in expensive areas - and I wasn't on commission, I just hated dealing with their claims when I had to deduct an excess from their settlements.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Looking for advice re multi-trip travel insurance.

I travel for work about five or six times a year (I'm self-employed) and I also travel for holidays/short breaks etc. All within the UK & Ireland and almost all involve a flight on a scheduled low-cost airline.. I have been looking at annual travel insurance but none of the run of the mill policies seem to cover cancellation of trips due to other people's illness/inability to attend events. With all this swine flu swirling about, I had wanted to get cover which would compensate me if I had to cancel trips due to the illness of other people rather than merely my own.

While most policies cover cancellation due to the illness or inability to attend of "business associate", the definition of 'business associate" in most policies seems to exclude people employed by other organisations. Given the relucantance of insurance companies to pay out, I think it might be better to be sure.

Should I just ring a broker or is there anyone out there who might be able to advise? Sorry if this has been posted before, but I have read all the way back to April and can't see a similar query.
