Hi everyone, was hoping someone may have some advice on the best cover for our travel situation please. We're heading to Nepal for 5 months to volunteer and then are travelling home overland through various countries. We'll be away for 8 months in total, it's me and my OH travelling independently, probably doing some high-risk activities such as white water rafting.
We'd really appreciate any help you may be able to give, thanks a lot.

    Hiya FH Brit

I am not Donna i can assure you - If i had something to say i would do so under my own login. The fact is due to you & your 'i know it all, dont dare disagree with me' manner in some of your posts, i have backed off posting on this site (oh and the fact you went to my employers, yes what a weirdo )

I still read this site but refrain from posting much - i read Donna's post and totally agreed with it, so i thanked her??

Thing is FH, i have absolutely no doubt that you are an expert in your field, a hospital debt collector i believe? Can i suggest that you perhaps stick to that subject & that will save peeps having to set you straight, then you getting upset & throwing around absurd accusations

    Hi Brit,

I agree, you must beaware of comments and not take them as red. Simply ask the travel agent to confirm 'in writing' what your covered for is the answer.

PS I am a travel agent of over 25 years in an agency with ABTA, ATOL & IATA.

    Its hot today !

Ah! there we are, Travel Agent, well I have so many problems as my patients say "my TA told me......." Well with all due respect, Travel Agents in my opinion should stick to what they do best sell travel tickets. Insurance is specialist information and TA's often just sell a policy without knowing the policy details or what the traveller needs.

I have said MANY times before (see links below) do not buy insurance from a Travel Agent.

DO I remain honest or not declare information about knee.
    Thanks for help

If you do not tell them you are commiting insurance fraud and in any case if they find out (and any decent IC will) your policy will be void and worthless

    Emergency Kennel or Cattery Costs
    Up to £400. No excess.
Winter Sports Cover is an optional extra, and offers the following cover:
    Ski Equipment
Up to £800 per insured person. £60 excess.
    Ski Pack

    Piste Closure
    Up to £200. No excess.
    Other Optional Cover available:

The policy also now includes Financial Failure Holiday Protection

Is this a good policy and price and if so is it worth paying the extra £12 to wipe out the excess fees?

    Opinions greatly appriciated.

The policy looks fine, pretty much like any other run of the mill travel policy.

Read the policy wording, some insurers will not charge you an excess on medical claims if you ring the assistance company first before having treatment in the U.S.

Most people leave the excess in place and do not pay the additional to premium to remove it, up to you! Bear in mind that if you had a really unfortunate holiday and you both claimed for lost baggage, medical, money, you may end up paying for 2 excesses for each seperate incident. On the other hand, hopefully you will have a great holiday and not need to claim!

Would £500 for missed departure be enough to cover your flight tickets?

I don't know how long you are traveling for so I don't know if the price is ok, I would do a comparison on moneysupermarket.com .

If you are planning to travel again in the next year it may be worth you having an annual policy as you could get one for almost the cost of the single trip cover you are considering. Some annual policies will cover U.K holidays and dependent children or grandchildren who may be able to travel independently on an annual policy.

    Hope this helps.

Reading the policy i dont think i have that option not to pay.

Hoping i dont have to make a claim but if i have to make 1 claim it will cost me £60 instead of the extra £12 to remove the excess so really dont know which way to go on this one :(

As it is £500 per person and nil excess on it yes it would be enough to cover the ticket cost.

2 weeks. I know i can get policies cheaper but excess seems to be higher and after reading some of the stories of poor cheaper companies just wondering how this company stands up as a major brand.

No plans to to go abroad again in the next year.

Me too for my 17 year old son. Doesn't seem as if travel insurance is available for anyone under 18 not travelling with their family or as part of a group with someone over 18.

I am looking for family insurance that will still cover me if i travel independently without the kids!

We also normally book flights and hotels independently and in August we are doing a self drive to France. Is there anything I should be specifically looking for in the policy?

Thanks for any help, I'm a bit unsure when it comes to insurance!

    Well, having worked in Travel Insurance, all I can ask you is;

Can you guarantee that you are not going to trip over or slip/get in a road accident that is someone else's fault/hurt the other knee/have complications from surgery that come about suddenly a year after/have the same problem start in the other knee/have the condition spread to affect your elbow, wrist or ankle/ever need to make any claim whatsoever?

If you can guarantee all this, then you should get away with it. And can you follow up with this weekend's lottery numbers for me please? :D

Claims handlers get a lot of abuse, a lot of it due to people getting upset that they can't bend the rules. Now that doesn't make it OK to be rude or totally confrontational, but they are businesses and not charitable organisations. They cannot pay out just because a claimant thought the proper level of cover was too expensive, or that the conditions are silly and don't apply to their particular family. It's a holiday - a luxury, not a necessity.

If you aren't covered, you could have horrendous bills hounding you for years to come. If a person decides not to declare something like high blood pressure and then has a stroke, spends six months in a coma in a Florida ITU, then dies, the next of kin has to deal with the bills, including the money to fly the body back home.

Not something I would wish on my worst enemy, but it can and does happen.

By all means shop around, but don't skimp on the cover. Bad stuff happens sometimes. Don't make it worse by invalidating the insurance.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
