Sorry to point out but your totally wrong and mislead in your above comments. - Not TOTALLY - Please read on.
You seem to be confused by package bonded holidays and non packaged bonded holidays. Chartered flights in the main 99% of them are chartered by tour operators who have to by law protect the consumers against financial failure of the package and those companies would be companies with an ATOL (i.e Thompson and Thomas Cook) so yes there is no need to cover them through airline failure insurance. - NO NEED??? I'd hate to be Rob when he listens to "no need to cover" then finds out when he can't claim or the airline insurers refuse to pay out on a legal technicality or some other excuse and Rob is stuck.
Just because you book through an ABTA agents or the airline is an IATA airline does not mean you are protected as you point out - I did not "point this out" as you put it, my comment was NOT NORMALLY BE LEFT STRANDED.
In fact i can walk into an ABTA agent today and book a lufthansa flight who are an IATA airlines and if they went bust I would not be covered unless the ABTA agent had scheduled airline failure insurance. - Again as I said NOT NORMALLY.
Also you suggest "that many holiday flights are" charter - this is far from the truth, - Not at all - I am quite correct MANY (not all) holiday flights are charter BUT not ALL charter are holiday!!! (Please read what I write not what you think I write)
in fact there are very approximately some 12 million charter flights a year and the low cost carriers excluding all the other airlines that offer scheduled flights are some 100 million - Absolutely, but as I again said before NOT ALL CHARTER ARE HOLIDAY FLIGHTS - Low cost carriers are normally charter. (please note normally)
Its these scheduled flights that are not covered, especially if you book direct with the airline and if you book through a travel agent you only covered if the travel agent or ATOL holder has taken out cover themselves. No comment - has nothing whatsoever to do with what I was saying to Rob.
On the protectmyholiday comments i do not understand the comment, does not make sense but one observation i made from Robs blog is that the cover provided on the Columbus Direct policy is Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance ONLY whereas the protectmyholiday covers not only the ailrine but all other parts of the holiday like hotel, car hire, excursions, train, ferry etc.

Donna - Your opionion and of course you are entitled to it. I work within the medical/travel/insurance business and my comment about what is Chartered and Scheduled is the Civil Aviation Authority's view (they know better than you and I).
ABTA and IATA do offer SOME protection, no matter what you think. I would only say to Rob or anyone reading this, is;
a) Anyone can post here - there is no guarantee of correctness in ANY post.
b) Caution should be given to ANY and ALL information read here.
c) The best way is find out for yourself and use these posts as guidance only as to where to find out.
d) I have, and I am sure many others as well, had to deal with people who read on posts like this some missinformation and end up paying for someone else's error.
Donna - Please note that my posts are full of BEWARE, CAUTION, MAINLY, SOME, I SUGGEST etc. etc. that is because I never claim to know for certain (no one can, they do NOT know the poster's exact circumstances or even if the poster has worded their qestion right).
Hi Brit,
I agree, you must beaware of comments and not take them as red. Simply ask the travel agent to confirm 'in writing' what your covered for is the answer.
PS I am a travel agent of over 25 years in an agency with ABTA, ATOL & IATA.
 Its hot today !0 -
- Perhaps Rob understands, and that's all that matters as it was he I was responding to. I am sorry you do not understand, perhaps if you do not understand something you should refrain frm commenting all together.

We usually travel to our home in Florida where we stay for several months over the winter and the best insurance company we have dealt with was Insureandgo which we found on the internet. We do the one trip thing, rather than annual policy as we can't afford to go anywhere else after that trip!
We have only claimed from them for one of the trips (we both had to visit the doctor/hospital for minor ailments) but they paid up no trouble at all. They are part of AEG though, so whether that might be a problem in future I don't know.
Trouble is once we hit the big 65 who will then give us decent coverage to Florida for a trip of 4-6 months. We are currently 62 (63 this year) and 60 (61 this year). We don't have any bad pre-existing conditions.
Can anyone recommend companies who cover this sort of trip? We don't want to take out a different credit card to get this type of coverage though.0 -

My 18year old daughter is going on holiday with her cousin (Cyprus) and at the same time my 14 year old son is going to Spain with a school friend and his family. So my wife and I thought we would make the most of it and have a week away on our own (Spain).
Question is, how do I buy an insurance policy that will cover all of us?
I assume a single trip family policy will not be good enough even if we are all away at the same time (give or take a day).
Will I need to take out a multi-trip family policy that covers the 14 year old being on his own?
Any suggestions?0 -
An update on the above...................I have been reminded that I have a multi-trip family insurance thrown in with my bank account. Had a look at the T's & C's and that covers me and my wife but not my kids as they need to be travelling with me to be covered. So I need to get separate single trip policies for these two. My daughter is fine as she is over 18, however, if I try to use Moneysupermarket.com to get my 14 year old son a single trip policy I am told that at least one adult needs to be included.... As I said above he is travelling with a school friend and his family. Could I get them to add him to their ploicy?
Anyone know where I could get a poilcy just for my son?

Have a look at THIS TOPIC which may have some information.
Be aware that any policies underwritten by Axa are not recommended as they have a very poor record of paying out in the event of a claim.0 -

I've been honest and cancelled my one trip insurance to Europe as I've been put on a hospital waiting list for knee surgery. I'd been with Free Spirit for years as they'd previously covered by existing medical conditions....won't cover me now.
HELP where do I go now to get cover for me and family with some repatriation cover if I need it.
DO I remain honest or not declare information about knee.
Thanks for help0
