Just had my subscription confirmed by 18185. I do not own a mobile phone and find my major call costs are when I phone mobiles from my BT line (evenings and weekends.) The idea of approx half price calls is appealing to me!

Just having a look at the rates table and I see-
    UK fixed ................................................... 0.0 p/min
Does this mean if I call a landline during the day I'll only be charged 4/5p connection irrespective of the duration of my call? If so awesome - long daytime landline calls are the only other charge on my bill.

If I'm correct I need to make 6 call per quarter with BT(to avoid extra charges for caller id and answer phone services) - but I believe these can be "free" call made on evenings and weekends. Confirmation of this would be welcome.

    Thanks in advance!

Your notice they charge 7p for calls to mobiles at weekends.6p in week. But instead of using 18185 use their 0808 Freephone Access Number and your get them for 6p. See http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php (Connection charge of 5p applies to UK Mobile Calls .Whatever way you access service.)

Yes if you call a 01/02/03 number at any time via the Indirect Access Number 18185 your only be charged 5p per call.

BT say : "There’s a minimum call requirement for this product. This means you have to make at least 2 landline calls per month or 6 per quarter, depending on how often you're billed. If you don’t make these calls you’ll be charged £1.50 per month/£4.50 per quarter. The calls have to be chargeable or included with your call plan."
  • Thanks a lot for the confirmation Ypaymore!

No problems with the call quality the first few times I've used it - going to reprogram my phone book :)

    Hi
Can anyone advise me - if I take my line rental through Orange (EE) - will I still be able to use an override provider such as 18866 to make cheap calls? Hope someone knows.
    Thanks

I'm with 1899 and they have just taken a payment from my bank account without sending me a bill at all so I have had no warning they were going to take out the payment.

Is this happening to anyone else?
    Thanx

I'm with 18185. I usually only have small bills, £2 or £3, every couple of months. This is paid by DD on my credit card. The most recent one for £2.80 was declined. I went into their website, and was forced to change payment details to another credit card. I've just had a phone call from the bank of the original credit card saying the reason they declined it is it looked suspicious, and that someone was trying to obtain the details illegally. They're now cancelling the card, and issuing me with a new one. They may have just been over-zealous, but I'm now a bit worried about the other credit card I have list on my account with them. Has anyone else had this type of problem? I'm thinking of leaving them, but the international calls are so much cheaper, and I've not had an issue with them before. Thanks!

Change your payment method to Direct Debit from your bank account instead of Recurring Payment on a card.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Does anyone have line rental with EE/Orange? I am wondering if you can use override providers such as 18866 with them?

Is a direct debit better than a recurrring payment on a credit card. I set up an account with 18185 about 3 weeks ago and quoted my credit card. should I have used by bank account details please. What are the pros and cons?

With all due respect, have you not seen all the posts on here regarding the pitfalls of setting up a Recurring Payment using your credit card, as well well as the advice on the subject by Marttin:eek:. You should ALWAYS use direct debit through your bank as YOU have full control, not the supplier.

Best all round supplier to use is 18185 ;) and if you cant use the indirect access you can use the 0808 Freephone Access Number. Not as cheap as 18185 indirect for certain calls but still cheaper then EE/Orange.
