This 18185 outfit are a pain. My online bank account shows very clearly that there is a live DD with the correct reference number set up. 18185 are adamant that there isn't, so I made a direct payment transfer as per their instructions ( it was for under one pound!!) and I still can't get into my 18185 account.:mad::mad::mad:
  • There is some policy where UK banks must delete direct debits which haven't been used for 13 months I think it is.

This caught me out before with a credit card company where DD was showing as live on their systems, but missing on my bank, and payment was refused.

Eventually fixed by getting credit card to delete direct debit, wait a day and set it up again. I suggest you get your bank to delete the DD and then set it up again on 18185 site.
  • Very helpful thread. I've just signed up for 18185 need to remember to phone the number and ill hopefully keep my virgin bills down now.

    Thanks everyone :)
  • I have just realised that i am being charged by BT for mobile calls although I prefix 18185 when ringing a mobile. Bt told me because I go through them there is a charge. Can this be correct, I pay 6p or 7p a minute (weekday or weekend) to 18185 plus a connection charge of 5p then on top BT charge me?

No, the 18185 prefix on a BT line should bypass your default calls provider (BT) and send the call out via 18185. BT cannot charge anything for such calls.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You don't say which brand (1899, 18185 ...) They can all only be contacted via their websites (or, in principle, by a letter to Lugano, Switzerland, where they are based.)

For eg 18185, go to their website, click on contact, under contact customer services click on here, click on radio button for report a fault, click on payment, fill in form saying that you've mistakenly sent them £100 and can they please refund the resulting credit balance.
They have very few staff - that's why it's so cheap. Whoever looks at your form may not know how to do a refund. And I'm not sure if they are bound to make a refund in such a case; they could just say your account will be in credit until you use up the £100.

Don't give up, you were nearly there. You're right, they don't make it easy. Once you've got to

    Connection | Invoice | Charges/Payment | Account |

    click on Charges/Payment.

    Then on Another payment problem.

Then on "this has not solved my problem, take me to the form" (or some such).

Then, at last, you get a form. You have to enter any old number for a call you made or might have made, and your number, and you get a free text box where you can describe your mistake and ask for mercy.

  • Just had my subscription confirmed by 18185. I do not own a mobile phone and find my major call costs are when I phone mobiles from my BT line (evenings and weekends.) The idea of approx half price calls is appealing to me!

Just having a look at the rates table and I see-
    UK fixed ................................................... 0.0 p/min
Does this mean if I call a landline during the day I'll only be charged 4/5p connection irrespective of the duration of my call? If so awesome - long daytime landline calls are the only other charge on my bill.

If I'm correct I need to make 6 call per quarter with BT(to avoid extra charges for caller id and answer phone services) - but I believe these can be "free" call made on evenings and weekends. Confirmation of this would be welcome.

    Thanks in advance!
