After the first bill (after about a month), they bill bi-monthly.

I've had no problems at all with billing.

I (and Martin) recommend Direct Debit and not continuous payment authority on a debit or credit card.

Thanks for the information. May I ask why you recommend direct debit?

Because you can require your bank to repay any incorrect call whereas, with contnuous payment authorities, you're stuffed.

i signed up for 18185 yesterday lunchtime and all seemed to have gone ok online.
However I'm still waiting for my email notification of customer number. How long does this normally take?

Less than a day. Check your spam box.

Have just been looking on their site and it says that to call UK fixed (which I presume means landlines) the cost is 0.00p. I thought Martin said it was 5p per call, which I thought was very good anyway.

Am I reading their prices correctly do you think?

    Yes, 5p connection + 0p per minute.

What do you hear when you try to dial using the 18185 prefix?

I am a Virgin Media customer so i used the 0808 number and got: "Welcome. Please enter the number you wish to call and press the hash button"

Does this mean I'm registered but my email registration with my customer number has gone astray/not sent yet?

I don't think its anything to do with spam as I went on the site tonight and entered my email address for the current rate newsletter and got an immediate reply into my inbox.

I can't find anyway of contacting them without inputting my customer number which of course I don't have yet. I was thinking of re-registering. Any thoughts?

Update: Found the number 0808 170 1818 which tells me I have an account and gives account no. I was then able to log on and confirm that my account had been set up correctly. Im still puzzled however as to why I haven't had the confirmation email. I checked my email address in the personal details and it doesn't have the * or hash that others on this thread have reported as being responsible for lack of email bills

I think the minimum amount they are prepared to bill is £1.50.

That means they won't bill you until you reach at least that value ... even if that is well over a year later. Then the DDI has expired and they claim it's because you've cancelled it (No, most DD's automatically fall dormant after 1 year of no collection). They've got a bit better recently though and at least now advise you on the message you get when dialling why the service has been suspended, or is about to be suspended, and what needs to be done :)

Anyway, I'd still agree, pay by DD as you can cancel a DDI direct with the bank, whereas a continuous authority requires a supplier to act on your instruction to them not to collect. (Plus as you say, you get the benefit of the protection of the DD guarantee after they've collected if you don't agree with the amount)
