What is the quality like with 18185? Going to be switching back to BT soon, but their mobile costs are really expensive.
Seriously though, 99 tiumes out of 100, no problems.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I registered with 18185 three days ago and it said I'd get a confirmation email within 24 hours. Never did.
Today I got an email asking why I hadn't used my account yet. So my husband tested the service and was able to make a call. However, I've never received my customer number, so I have no way of checking my bills or logging in or contacting them, since you have to have an account number to fill out the fault form on their site.
I can't even close my account because I've never been told the number.
I called their freephone number, and it said my phone wasn't registered so it couldn't give me my account number - the same phone my husband had made a 18185 call from earlier.
The email they sent asking why I hadn't used my account said to email customer services if there was a problem, and gave the email address:service@18185.co.uk
I emailed that, and it bounced back as undeliverable. Now these
people have my credit card info and I have no way of stopping them
from charging me, or ensuring that they charge me correctly.
I first read about them because they were recommended by
MoneySavingExpert. This was my first time using this website, and
I'm completely let down.
Is there any way of making sure they delete my account and card info?0 -
Calm down.
Been with them for years without problems. Saved me a fortune.
Check you spam folder.
Are you saying you've called 0808 170 18 18 from the number you registered and can't get your account number?
However, I'd echo Martin's comments and caution against ever authorising continuous payment authority on a credit or debit card.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. It's definitely not in my spam folder. Yes, I called 0808 170 18 18 and got a message saying that the phone I was dialing from was not registered, even though that was the phone number I'd entered when I registered, and even though I was able to make a 18185 call earlier from it.
And you have to give them some sort of payment info in order to register, so how do you get around that?
Is there any way of contacting them and deleting my account, which clearly hasn't been set up correctly, or at least making a formal complaint against the transparency of their business practices?0 -
Direct Debit would have been the payment method I'd have chosen.
Anyway, without knowing your A/C number, contacting them is near impossible. As 18185 is working, I can only assume there's some sort of delay in getting the 0808 170 18 18 system working so trying that every day for a while might crack the problem.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. All I can say is ditto, ditto, ditto, and then some, but this time in relation to 1899.
If MARTIN wishes to promote these companies on HIS web site then I think that HE with the muscle should be talking with these companies in HIS own interest and those of us who have taken his recommendations on trust.

I have tried these but they are problematic and they cost much more than services that use VoIP technology.
All u need is an internet connection.
With companies such as LocalPhone or PokeTalk, you don't need any special phones either. Your normal phone works fine.
Unlike services that use non-geographic numbers, there are no connection fees or minimum charges either from them or your landline provider.
An year ago, I was paying over £90 per month on international calls. Now I average less than £8 per month.
With PokeTalk, I can also call all UK geographic numbers free of charge 24/7 and many countries abroad.
Also try companies with various names of the Betamax group; but pre and after sales service is non-existent.0 -
18185 have quietly increased the cost of calls to Switzerland by 100% - from 1p/minute to 2p/minute. (I remember when they cost 0.5p/minute!). Many other rates have also increased.
It's sad that they do this without informing their customers. At least BT tell us about their ripoff rate increases, though in almost illegible print.
Also, the e-mail from 18185 received today tells me they will charge £xx.yy for calls and details are available online. They usually are, but not this time. Clicking away, I see NINE invoices listed, all dated 01-07-10. Clicking on these produces no details, except for 'no calls'. Huh? So why do they want my money?
Skype on Three @ 1.4p/minute has suddenly become more attractive. No 5p connection charge, either.
Ping! Another e-mail just received - this time from 18866 - tells me my invoice is available. A different amount. And we haven't used 18866. Am I going to get seven more?0 -
I haven't used Call188866 for many many years and out of the blue this morning I've received an invoice for £3.
Does anyone have a contact email address or phone number for them? - I've searched their website high and low.
Thanks0
