You're not kidding. I signed up on 18585's website on Friday and have not heard a peep back. When I dial 18585 it tells me curtly that i'm not registered for this service and to ring 08000363838. Calling that i get a hard to follow message from what may be Primus. The message leads into an automated system which advises me to 'press 0 to speak to an operator' - Then it tells me that +that number 'is not a valid option'
What a crock of ****.
So. How do I proceed?
http://18185.co.uk/index2.phpTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Could it just be that it takes them several days before setting me up on the service.
Thanks in advance JJ
I honestly cannot remember now, but I did have a bit of a problem at first with the direct debit not being set up properly; don't know why though!
Turned out OK in the end and am saving money :money:

Doh!!:o:o
The funny thing is that I started out by googling 18585 and the top link took me to 18185.co.uk where I proceeded to sign up and give my bank details etc. What a silly sausage I am. But when I tried to use it by dialling 18585 I got that shoddy service message.
So, apologies for slagging off 18185, but 18585 is still rubbish. lol. Maybe I should set up a website on 18585.co.uk and take money off of all the other dumb blondes out there.
Only Kidding, nobody would be that stupid, would they?
:hello:

Am I the only one that thinks this company is a bit shady running at least 3 websites with 3 different prices 18866/1899/18185.
For example 18866 charges 12p/min for UK mobile calls where as 18185 charges 7p/min and 1899 charges 6p/min. All of these websites are run by the same company Finarea SA registered in Switzerland.
Not only do they run the 3 websites mentioned above they also run dozens of VoIP services including "VoipBuster, VoipCheap & SipDiscount".
I used to use call18866 until one day their system decided to tell me my card had been declined when my bank told me no transaction had been attempted. After that they would not try the payment again so I couldn't use it anymore. They do seem a bit of a bunch of wideboys.0 -

BTW, 18185 charges 6p and 1899 charges 10p - so it's a question of being on your toes to get the mest money-saving rates..Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. If (like Finarea) you were running a business which provided low-cost connections from various callers to various destinations, wouldn’t you try to market these as widely as possible?
What’s ‘wideboy’ about that?
To derive the maximum benefit, research as thoroughly as you can, in particular for the calls that are currently costing you the most. Heinz and Victor_Delta have explained this pretty well.

Well no not really, It is the fact that they market more than one service and then juggle the prices so that the unweary loose out. I think it is sharp practice to sign people up to one service then increase prices and rely on inertia for them to keep using while opening up another service under a different brand to attract new customers.
If I were running such a service I would be marketing a single service making sure it is the most competitive and put all effort into getting as many people as possible on that service, not hiding behind multiple sites to make it look like there is competition.0 -

However, to close the discussion (from my point of view at least), I would just say that this forum is on a money-saving, not a business moraity website (is there such a thing in business?).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. I subscribe to 18185 and am with Talk Talk.
I don't use it much as I have an all day call plan but when ringing national numbers during the day I use Say No to 0870 and the 18185 service.
At the weekend I just wondered how much it would cost to ring a mobile phone in Portugal and dialled 08081 703 703 and followed the instructions and it came back at 1p per minute.
I thought 'That's surely not right', didn't proceed with the call and went onto the 18185 website and saw that a landline to mobile call in Portugal should be 12p per minute with a connection charge.
I really want to ring this mobile but am a bit scared as to how much I will get charged...
Not being able to contact them I thought I would ask here.
I send at least 5 texts a day to this Portugese mobile number, which costs me 50p in all as I have an international bolt on for my 02 PAYG mobile phone.
So using the 18185 wold make more sense if it is 1p per minute....
Hoping someone can tell me that whatever the automated lady says is true and I won't be stung with a large connection fee....
Oh,and it is the same 1p per minute message on Sunday and Monday,so it wasn't just that it was cheaper at the weekend.0
