I have just gone over to Virgin media for my phone b/b and TV

I have signed up to 18185.co.uk on the advice of this website

I understood that from non-BT landlines to an 020 number it was 5p connection and 0p per minute

I have made two 30 minutes calls and the invoice on the 18185 site is saying £1:13

Surely if it was really 0p per minute as this site says it would be 10p?

I don't think that rate is that cheap - maybe cheaper than BT and Virgin but 1p a minute is not "saving a fortune" as one of the people on here claimed

Has anyone got any contact details for 18866. I have a query over an amount they have taken but the contact us button just goes to automated q&a. I cant see an email address either.

I think you must have misread the 18185 website. The cost of calling UK geographical numbers via either the 020 or 0808 gateway numbers is clearly shown there as 5p connection and 1p/minute. Hence, a 30 minute call would cost 35p and two would cost 70p (it looks like you went a bit over 30 minutes for each of those calls if your online calls record totalled £1.13).

However, unless you have inclusive geographiocal calls at all times via your VM line, I'd advise against using the 020 gateway number and suggest, insteasd, you use the 0808 freephone number (that will mean there is no chance of VM charging you anything for the call).

Calls to UK mobiles AT WEEKENDS are a very reasonable 6p/minute using that gateway too but bear in mind that weekday calls are a less-competitive 10p/minute.

BT would charge 9.05p connection + 5.25p per minute so each of your 30 minute calls would have cost, not 35p, but £1.66 on BT (and probably a fair bit more on VM). That well under a quarter of the cost - I would describe that as saving a fortune!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thankyou Heinz. I must admit when I saw your post I thought this was referring to a different problem others were discussing.

Just tried sending an email and it just got bounced straight back. Copied and pasted the address so I cant see how I would have got it wrong.

It may well have been but making contact with the company is the issue. No promises that it'll still work but I definitely received an email from them at that address at some time in the past.

  • After 6 months use, my access to 1899 blocked because "altho I have paid all invoices I MAY have another account" (other tel. no or sister company) which is unpaid. Tried to tell them NOT SO using their instruction to quote "code 5" but to no avail, incl. raising ticket enquiries or whatever to contact them. Had problem previous month when my "bank refused payment" (a credit card I've had for 20 years & use very often, incl. 5 monthly payments to 1899!) & they insisted on a details of another card instead - makes one very wary of internet transactions when £4680 was phished out of my bank account 18 months ago - however, gave new card details but, alas, 1 month later usage blocked. Add to this that weekend calls to mobiles went up by 50% (4p per min. to 6p) without notice, & trying to contact them, let alone get a reponse that says they've understood, is worse than head-banging-brick-wall syndrome. Good while it lasted (6 months) but it's goodbye to them.

I can't help you on the technical payment side. I had trouble setting up a 18185 account at first and I never did get in touch with anyone, I did it in the end, now I just keep my fingers crossed nothing goes wrong or I'll be here myself looking for help!

I haven't looked to see if 6p a minute to mobiles is still good, but it is a lot cheaper than BT! And 5p a call in the day to 01 etc numbers is still good, although the line is sometimes terrible and caller display at the other end may say International on some of our friends phones! - they think we are trying to sell them something or be from BT !!

Keep your chin up - hopefully someone else will be able to offer you some more helpful advice.

Yes, 18185's rate to call mobiles at weekends, previously 4p/minute (6p/minute during the week) has recently changed to 6p/minute at all times.

However, there's not a lot of competition at the moment. One or two 5p/minute 0844 gateway providers occasionally pop up but, as ever, the need to pay your call provider's connection or set-up charge - 9.05p in the case of BT - and to start paying halfway through dialling and getting charged even if the call isn't answered are a real drawback with them.
