is there another company that does landline to mobile any cheaper ? i get no mobile signal where i live so have to use a landline when at home

Yes, but you will probably have to start paying halfway through dialling - see HERE
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Having problems with 18185 I can not access my account. I have sent them an email, but have a couple of questions if anyone knows the answer.

I signed up for 18185 as my DH has a contract mobile with free calls to landlines, so if I want to speak to him I ring him and he doesn't answer and he rings me back ( it also means he doesn't have to talk to me in the middle of an open plan office he can pop somewhere quieter when it is convenient)- sky charge me 18p even if he doesn't answer his phone. I pay BT landline, but also have sky phone with a £5 charge for free calls to landlines.
Will my charges for 18185 and 1899 be as a BT customer? Does 1899 charge as soon as you start to dial or only on connection - ie if he doesn't pick up it is free. ( it doesn't go to answer phone as I only let it ring a couple of times). Thank you.

1899, 18185 and 18866 accounts (I have all three) are completely separate from BT and Sky - you'll receive an online invoice about every 2 months from whichever you subscribe to.

Unlike the 'hop back onto BT' 1280 prefix which you cannot use because Sky now uses WCLI, you can (AFAIAA) use any of them even though you CPS your calls via Sky Talk Anytime.

I use 18185 for some of my calls to mobiles and only get charged when the mobile is answered - either by the person, the mobile's voicemail or by a message from the mobile network such as, "The mobile you're calling may be swoitched off".

I have a 18185 account and tend to use this prefix for all calls.
Phoneline is with Primus. Are there occasions /types of call when it is advantageous to not use 18185?

I am thinking of binning them and the dialer box - the quality of he line has been terrible of late - the wife is not happy, so she's the boss!

Would it be best to stick with primus or go back to BT?

It depends what calls package you have with Primus.

I have one of Primus's old CPS packages which gives me free UK 01/02/03 calls of up to 90 minutes each evenings and weekends and calls of up to 20 minutes each to UK mobiles for a flat rate 20p - so those are the calls for which I don't use 18185 (I only use 18185 for very short calls to UK mobiles, my weekday daytime UK 01/02/03 calls and for my calls to Spain.

My memory's failing* but I thought I used to recommend Primus Saver Option 2 - which gave free evening and weekend UK 01/02/03 calls of up to 90 minutes each. If you're on that, make use of it - I haven't paid a penny for my evening or weekend UK calls for nearly 5 years now.

I log into my account via https://secure.planet-talk.co.uk/ every time I get an email telling me they've at last managed to cobble together my bill.

    * Yes, it was Primus Saver Option 2 (I changed to that on 5-12-2005 and then to Penny Mobile 2 in October 2007).
