  • Ive just made 2 chocolate cakes without eggs and it was lush! I may add some soya flour next time though to hopefully prevent it cracking on top. I used chocolate spread for the filling.

    Melt in a pan
    3 oz of butter
    1 Tbsp golden syrup

    Mix together
    8 oz plain flour
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 oz cocoa
    1 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp bicarb
    2 oz sugar

Stir in butter and syrup mixture
Add about 1/2 pt of warm water to give a very soft mixture.
Spoon into 2 greased sandwich tins.
Bake for about 30 mins at 180c

Sandwich with cream, buttercream or apricot jam

**edit*the reasons I'm trying to bake without eggs is because I no longer wish to buy eggs from caged hens and Free Range are very expensive where I live. It is also convenient to bake without them-especially if you fancy cake and have no eggs left.**

    Cost-approx 70p including filling.

No-you are not a numbskull cos you are asking! Numbskulls are incapable of doing that! Well if I was cooking bolognese for 4 people lets say, I would add about half a cup of oats and see how you get on wwith it. If you are happy, anb a bit more the next time until you feel you wouldnt want to add any more. Never overdo it the first time in case you get the balance wrong as that would then put you off.
I often mix dried soya mince with my minced beef-again-try half a cup(soak in hot water first) then next time try a cup. Just xperiment over time with it.

Thanks angelatgraceland, that sounds great - I LOVE experimenting, but have to be careful, normally only I like it, which means I get to fill up on it all, hehe, :rotfl: I will try that next time (and if DH is making bolognaise, then I will add it when he's not looking, that way he DAREN'T complain, ha ha...)

Wish me luck, taking DD out on a driving lesson tomorrow

  • Had to go out to buy dog food today. I go to our local farm shop where I buy a big bag (15kg) of dried SupaDog sensitive - £19.30 -

Hi have you ever thought of looking online to see if it is cheaper I looked into it thanks to someone on this forum and have ordered my cat food £5 cheaper (and I was already ordering online which was £5 cheaper than the vets!!! So a saving of £10 a bag:rotfl: ) they also do flea stuff and wormers The flea stuff the vet wanted to charge £31.95  and online it was £18.80 delivered:T I can't do links but have copied top line so you can find it Home » Forums > Home, Work & Play > MoneySaving in Marriages, Relationships & Families > Pets & Pet Care » Cheap and reliable online pet supplies

This will give you a list of links to look through and compare.

Had a bad day today went to lidls, rainbow and asda with a list determined not to get things I didn't need. Asda's came to over £83:eek:  but £46 of it was clothes which doesn't come out of the GC budget luckily. But still more than I wanted to spend I think this first month will be trial and error I really need to menu plan and use up what I've got so I don't go into asda and buy the same stuff as I usually buy, a hard habit to break!! But I am more aware of what I'm buying so that's a strat. Will update sig when I bring receipts upstairs

  • Hey without trying the link has worked you will find the last bit is a sticky fairly near top of list.

Have also made sandwhiches in freezer now...

    2 x ham and applewood
2 x ham and cheese with pickled onions in it
3 x peanut butter and banana (ope that will be ok!)
Half price ham and cheese from weekend cheese board splurge!

Can you make sandwiches and freeze them? really? I never knew that! I mean I know about freezing bread (I do that weekly anyway) but I didnt know you could make up the sarnies and freeze them... so I could buy reduced ham etc and make them up and then freeze... ooo... is it strange I feel excited?!

How long do they keep in the freezer and can you tell its a 'frozen sandwich'? Just thinking that would save me bags of time during the week if I make up mine and the OH's sarnies and freeze them all for the whole week... or 2.. or ooo the possibilities are endless....:D

LB these are my first frozen sandwiches!I got quite excited abt it to. Won't have first defrosted one till wed. All ones in freezer made from 33p reduced loaf, half price ham and odds of cheese, and 2 bananas that were 'on the turn'.
Really hope it works out as will save time and money.
  • Well I shall be awaiting eagerly your response to your first frozen sarnie then :) if you say they are good and you can't tell then that's good enough for me :D

right time for bed. night all

  • On the topic of freezing stuff this was a revelation to me as well
Someone suggested you could freeze mozerella balls to make it easier to grate it and I thought surely not. But I now have grated mozerella in freezer. I didn't realise you could freeze cheese But thinking about it I used to buy pizza at asda and if it wasn't cooked and eaten that night I'd freeze it. And what is on the top of pizzas mozerella and cheese:rolleyes:
Well you learn something new every day:rotfl: :j

I thought that microwaving them would dry out the soggy bits, but when I tried earlier it didn't (that's how come I've already eaten 2 now :rotfl: ). The way I'm going, by the time I come up with something they will all be gone.

I have just googled using up stale cake (yeah, I know mine isn't  ), and I have come up with some variations on bread and butter pudding. My bread and butter puddings are usually soggy in the middle so the family shouldn't notice anything different.

Thanks for the suggestion angelatgraceland, keep them coming and I will let you know which option I go for.

    Many thanks FFM :)

Well when I got home tonight I decided I would try to do something with them, so I put some honey in a pan with some sugar to boil for a few minutes. Then I cut up put the last of my fresh pineapple (had it for a while) and put in the bottom of a greased dish and poured the sugar mixture on top.

Then I went to the tin to get the muffins and they weren't as bad as I had thought they were going to be. I think they had dried out a bit, anyway I managed to get them out of the cases quite easily and put 5 of them upside down on top of the pineapple and put it in the oven for about 15 minutes.

Served hot with fresh cream and it was a really nice version of pineapple upside down! Haven't had anything like this type of pudding for ages.

Might do something similar using raisins with the other half of them tomorrow, and some lemon juice I think.
Haven't posted my weekend shop yet:eek: , but as I have dozed off twice in the middle of typing this, perhaps I need to go to bed now. Got to complete a job application too tomorrow, so need my wits about me.

    Hi

I have done two small shops at Somerfield ( which i hate doing as it's so expensive:rolleyes: ) mainly for salad things and ice lollys which we are going through so quickly it's unreal. I need to do a fruit and salad shop at the market tommorrow. So i have spent and extra £20.31 taking my total up to £79.17 leaving me with £70.83 for the rest of the month.

I have two freezers full to the brim so i think we'll be living off those for a bit and just getting fruit & veg.
