Hi there Fallen n Razra
You are right its awful... but hubby is quite glad as he only ate in the cook house when he was on duty because it was free ...nothing to do with me -honest :rotfl: that was hubbies doing. But every time he had eaten in there the following day he would have a dodgy stomach  not that im knocking the cook house -its just that hubby is used to my cooking so it doesn't take a lot to upset his stomach
He is away playing hockey wed/thu and this time he is taking a cool bag with his food in :rotfl: ....he reckons he can have his sandwiches weds lunch a pasta salad in the evening, thur he is having sandwiches and should be home for dinner.... so i will add some hm sausage rolls and something "cakey" in fact i might make a batch of Twinks for he to take..that will cause a riot on the mini bus:p .... the blokes must wonder what is going off...mind hubby sits there gloating which probably doesn't help
The daft thing is that even though to start with some of his workmates looked at him as though he must be "poor" so couldn't afford to buy from the NAFFIthey now realise he is much better fed, it costs a fraction of the price and its not full of garbage...plus he gets to spend his whole break sat on his bum chilling whilst they scuttle back n forth queing in the NAFFI
ok enough waffle i will get off and dig out some more recipes for hubbies snackies-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
Went to the health food shop today to stock up on some basics. Soya mince, lentils, soup mix, pearl barley and a chilled mix of mung beans for my salad.Soya flour was £1.19 and chickpea flour £1.28 for 500g to give you the idea of the prices.(I dont need either-I have both and now I know what to do with them they will get used) Went to somerfield-no salad stuff left at 2pm! went to veg shopand got what I needed aall except lettuce as I am not paying £1.20 or 95p for one! Bought beansprouts instead! Cucumbers were down to 69p so that was better. Got some flour in Somerfield for 45p per bag.Total of about £17.50 and I'm now halfway through my week.
Had a couple of the herb(bread) muffins this afternoon from my freezer-added some butter and cheese-like a bread roll-I sliced them in half. Very nice. Feel Im back on track now. Ive been ordered to make lots more sausage casserole by the kids-none of the extra made it to the freezer-I shall make it a standard Saturday dish! Ah-forgot the suet-but Im going to find the recipe to make dumplings using olive oil. I think its an Anthony Worral Thompson recipe. Rather make it using olive oil anyhow-far healthier.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -
Sounds like the jelly was not "thick" enough.
I know that you can buy something called "quick gel" which is similar to jelly but its usually used on things like fruit flan. These are not exactly OS but you could try it?
Have you thought about trying to make your own??
You could thicken some orange juice with arrowroot or cornflour.
arrowroot would go clear when heated with the juice. Cornflour would make it slightly cloudy.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -
victory - following weezl74's lead - could the cake bits end up in a trifle with jelly and custard? who am I to suggest a trifle as an American who's never made one yet :rotfl: but I love to eat them so should have a go at making one someday!

When I made my one I used ordinary jelly. I poured a little on to the sponge base when the jelly was cold and then put the sponge and remaining jelly into the fridge.
The sponge goes really cold with the soaked in jelly. When the remaining jelly is really gloopy/thick, I plopped it into the sponge base where it did its final setting.
Hope that helps

Victory - There were a couple of replies about frozen sarnies but you must have missed them - this thread moves so fast! I freeze ham and pickle and cheese and pickle sarnies no problem at all. I think you can freeze just about anything - apart from salad stuffs obviously - but any kind of cheese, meat, pickle, chutney or sauce would be fine I'm sure. Hope this helps:D0

Oh heck victory, sorry about that! I was more hoping you could pick up tips about egg substitutes from there!:o
Maybe someone will be along with a way to save it? What about a cocoa and golden syrup and butter based chocolate sauce to drench it in? Might they be tempted then?
Maybe it'd be a good idea to post your feedback onto that thread too, so you can save others from the same fate!
Anyhow, sorry I lead you down a bad route!
Weezl x
No worries:D the kids have had to eat laden with hot custard:D not one that is on my list to make again:rolleyes: it will be gone soon.

Hi Everyone!!
Went for a nice evening stroll with OB and on way back attacked Mr T on a whoopsie hunt. Just after 7pm definitely seems the time to go.
Picked up:
Pack of mince beef 21p
Peter's pie (now its OB) 22p
Steak pie 34p
Fish pie mix-salmon, cod and haddock 75p
Mince and pies will go on June's menu planner. Will use the mix with some half priced salmon in the freezer to make a lovely fish pie to share with Mum and Dad when they come over for dinner at the weekend.
Freezer is now bursting apart from a little space.
Taping the programme on ITV about the end of cheap food-hope it isn't....

I spent £3.60 on a steak for OH today. It's our wedding anniversary tomorrow and OH wanted to take me out for a meal. We have spent so much on meals out this month that I recon £3.60 is a lot better than £20+ for a meal out. I have prawns in the freezer so it's prawn cocktail, steak and salad for him and Salmon from the freezer for me and I've got some HM desserts.
A friend came around today so she had HM lasagne (with oats) and said it was wonderful. OH had some for tea tonight and there is still enough for another meal on Wednesday.January spend = £100
