Thanks missyg - I may well have some questions for you in the near future!

I'm feeling better but still not 100% - I'm just glad to be back on the road to recovery. OH is giving me acupuncture treatment this evening! My sickness will probably make me a STS next week - but theres always the following week! I'm determined to get to my target weight regardless of how long it may take!

kymrob congrats on your loss!

hello all, back to report on the outcome of the meal missy:D . No starter, and i chose the salmon and monkfish kebabs with sald and pots as a main - never had monkfish before and now a convert: a very 'meaty fish in texture. I heroically left the potatoes (had expected boiled new pots, got what looked like deepfried jacket potatoes). Did succum to the cheesecake though and relished every mouthful slowly so not going to complain now:rotfl: . I thought generally a good exercise in damage limitation and we both stuck to plan either side of the meal and 100% today.
As for who's birthday is next - cunning Ms bails has gone away for hers:D , but it's wed 4th of June (I think she's not back until thurs but I vote we still give the full treatment on wed for her to come back to).
Off to meet a friend soon for coffee. Evening meal is in the slow cooker - porkchops with fat trimmed off, 56g chorizo sauage(2.5syns each) roast peppers, corgettes, 150ml white wine, worcester sauce, onions & garlic. An addaptation of a delia cheat recipe. Will serve with mashed roast squash. Could do with a little bit of chochy but find at the mo I can just refuse to let the idea take seed in my mind and switch off. I really want to prove to myself I can shift a few lbs this time when I put them on, as I do expect to regularly put a few on. Maintaining for me means a regular up and down within a 4lb range. It's just this time there has been just upward motion for 4 weeks I'm trying to turn that around.
Delly - I can totally relate to being strong over the difficult stuff and blubbing over the little things. I still cry over the 'daddy, my daddy' scene in the railway children:o ...
Some more good losses coming in and another newbie or two - forgive me for not noting your names but you are very welcome to our lovely forum.

The Dragon - does the boss know that his calls were likely to cause a setback? What a horrible situation, hope things get sorted for you both.

Kymrob, you're so good at losing weight... give someone else a chance at slimmer of the month will ya?! I am only joking hon ;) Congrats! :D Well over halfway now according to your sig? When do you expect to achieve your goal?

FFM, totally agree with you, I did fine and I don't remember having much homework until I reached secondary school. He's done an hour this morning and I'm letting him have a break now. Is that really your first ever STS?! FANTASTIC!!! :D I want one of those one week :p I've had just about everything else in 0.25lb increments either way - you wouldn't think the STS would be so elusive! :rotfl: (I thought the saying was "fell swoop" but I have no idea really )

Oooh, BB is back!

Origin of the expression one fell swoop (though foul didn't seem wrong when I read it first either): From 'the phrase finder...'
This is one of those phrases that we may have picked up early in our learning of the language and probably worked out its meaning from the context we heard it in, without any clear understanding of what each word meant. Most native English speakers could say what it means but, if we look at it out of context, it doesn't appear to make a great deal of sense. That lack of understanding of the words in the phrase is undoubtedly the reason that this is often misspelled - 'at one fail swoop' (or sometimes, stoop).
So, what's that 'fell'? We use the word in a variety of ways: to chop, as in fell a tree; a moorland or mountain, like those in the northern UK; the past tense of fall, as 'he fell over'. None of those seem to make sense in this phrase and indeed the 'fell' here is none of those. It's an old word, in use by the 13th century, that's now fallen out of use apart from in this phrase and as the common root of the term 'felon'. The Oxford English Dictionary defines fell as meaning 'fierce, savage; cruel, ruthless; dreadful, terrible', which is pretty unambiguous.

Yep, since getting my new 'precision' scales for my birthday and since starting to 'maintain' the closest I've ever got to a real maintain has been 0.2lb - but as you know I work in full lbs so frequently report a STS. I will continue to work in full lbs because bodies fluctuate so much day to day that anything less would be a bit misleading (for me personally).

'fell swoop' eh? Hmm, I shall have to look it up and find out what it means too - I'm probably misusing it too :rotfl: .

Probably not and if he did he probably wouldn't care! :rotfl:

BB/missyg - I found this definition by googling:

In MacbethMacduff expresses stunned disbelief when told about the murder of his wife and children by Macbeth: What, all my pretty chickens and their dam
At one fell swoop?
The phrase at (orin) one fell swoop has now been Betty Martined to ‘at (orin) one foul swoop’ because the meaning of fell has largely been lost. Fell originally meant ‘fierce, savage; cruel, ruthless; dreadful, terrible’ when applied to animals and men, or to their actions and their attributes. Thus in c.1400 in his The buke of John Maundeuille being the travels of Sir J. Mandeville knight 1322-56,the good knight quite rightly gives that mass infanticide Herod the Great the following hefty serve: ‘Herode was a full wikkid man and a fell’. And in 1688 Randle Holme in his The academy of armory, or a storehouse of armory and blazontells us that ‘The... Ban-dog’ [i.e. a mastiff kept constantly chained up because of its ferocity] ‘...is fierce, is fell, is stout, is strong’. A fell swoop, therefore, is a savage and murderous swoop, a thoroughly beastly swoop, a deadly swoop of the sort one might expect from a felon. (Fell and felon would seem to be closely related words.)

So much for a fell swoop. What would a foul swoop be? It is unlikely, I think, that users would have in mind a swoop that ‘causes disgust because it has an offensive smell or taste’, or a swoop that is ‘morally evil, filthy, or obscene’ (some of the commoner senses of the word). Perhaps foul in the sense ‘unfair, against the rules of a game’ is uppermost in users’ minds. A foul swoop would therefore be tantamount to a foul stroke and Macduff speaking today would probably complain that Macbeth’s slaughter of his wife and kids was most unfair and just not cricket!

Now if I'd done Macbeth at school that would have helped, unfortunately I did Julius Caesar. So, Fell Swoop it definitely is and will be from now on. :T
