I've been interested for ages in making my own jewellery but really don't know where to start. I've looked for courses local to me but there aren't very many or are during my working week.

I just wondered if anyone had any hints/advice for where to start? Really I want to get into making silver jewellery.

    Thanks :)

When you say you want to make silver jewellery what do you mean exactly? If you mean something like silversmithing you will really need to do a course. If you mean you just want to make jewellery by putting together ready-made silver components (does that make sense?) you just need some basic tools as there are loads of videos on YouTube etc. You could also try precious metal clay. You will need to buy some equipment, but I have seen some lovely jewellery made using this stuff.

Thanks for your reply! Sorry for the delay but I thought I had replied on Friday :o

I took a look at the precious metal clay and that looks like a great place to start. I've already had a go at putting things silver bits together but am looking to go beyond that now.

    Thanks so much.

I have worked with silver clay and once you get the hang of it, it is very easy to use and you can make some beautiful things without spending too much initially.

If you are thinking of working with metals, I would really recommend a workshop. I did a one day workshop and i don't think I could have done anything without as there are so many tools and the little tips that a tutor can give are invaluable :)

If you need any help with silver clay feel free to give me a shout :)

Thanks so much for the advice/offer of help. I've looked around and the only courses I can find are mid week. I'm hoping when schools go back there may be an evening course I can do.

I've ordered some polymer clay to begin with so I can play around with that first and hopefully get the hang of it before moving on to silver clay!

Have you seen the magazine Make and Sell Jewellery? It has all sorts of different projects in many materials and often has freebies!
The website is also really good and has video tutorials and a forum where I'm sure they will help you.
If you want to make jewellery out of actual silver, I also recommend trying PMC silver clay. It is expensive, but is like making things out of playdoh. When you heat it, the clay burns away leaving actual silver which you can send to get hallmarked!
A course would help but I don't thinks it's crucial. You could perhaps look into a holiday course which could be fun! Have fun and post us some pictures of your creations :)

I just found a one day course at the local college and on the weekend. :j

I can't make the next one but they have one is a couple of months which I will try and sign up to.

Actually there are more courses than I thought. I looked a couple of weeks ago and they weren't on it then!

    Hi Folks

I've done a search but not coming up with anything. Do we have a thread on here anywhere for jewellery makers makes?

I know there's one for Sewing, Knitting and Making Cards, but wondered if there was one for jewellery making anywhere?

    Thanks

If there isn't one should we create this as it? I'd love to see what Jewellery makes people on here came up with.
