When I have made mistakes (a couple of corkers) I have always sent return postage costs in advance through paypal and a full refund of original postage and item cost once item is returned. I have never had a buyer get nasty as I think they can see I am genuine in my apology.

Whatever the rules are, morally I would want to give a full refund including all postage costs there is no reason a buyer should be out of pocket for a mistake made by the seller.

As a buyer i would expect a full refund inc postage,as a seller i would expect to pay the postage too. Pay up gracefully!!

    You described 2 dresses

The buyer thought they were buying 2 dresses

The buyer paid on the basis they were getting 2 dresses

You took the buyers money, and failed to supply the 2 dresses (because you sold one to someone else)

Give the buyer a full refund as you failed to supply the goods the buyer purchased.

If you want the dress back you sent, you'll have to pay the buyer for it's return (£4.00 would seem fair in the circumstances). Personally I would suggest the buyer is told to keep/dispose of the dress as they see fit to save you the £4.00 and the buyer the inconvenience of having to return the item (especially as it only seems to be worth £1.35!!!)

    Edit:
Interestingly, I just did a check on some of your feedback.
On 17-Dec-2007 you had an issue with a seller over a tea-set (some plastic bags had split apparently). You wanted a refund. You also expected the seller to refund you the return postage if they wanted the tea set back.
Now the situation is reversed, I'm not sure why you don't expect to have to pay the buyer of this dress (who thought they were buying 2!) to be refunded the postage for them sending it you back

You say you did a bulk relist, so you have tried and failed to sell it previously...another reason why just to give it to her....
I think the half price offer was acceptable but i get the feeling she doesn't like it as i think i would accept the refund....however she is entitled to refuse.....
I also think she was right to refuse the mutual until she had been refunded....

DITCH THE DRESS.....do you really want that trouble causing thing back!!! no doubt it will get lost in the post....
It must be your omen item....i've got a top that has a similar bad luck effect, it will be heading to the charity shop soon, bnwt Principles bought from ebay cost me £18(originally £35) ....cannot get rid of it, it's lovely too but doesn't fit me....giving it one more shot this week and that's it!!!!!
Never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid doing altogether.:D

I never said it was morally right.

Was just pointing out ebay policy.

If the OP wants to refund all costs thats fine & well done for putting your hands up for making a mistake.

I was just pointing out that if she doesn't want to there is not much the buyer can do about it!
:D All I want is an opportunity to prove that money doesn't buy happiness :D

  • if i bought what i thought was 2 of sommin and got sent just one id be rather annoyed!!!!

Yes, that's what I told her or I offered a 50% refund if she wanted to keep the one dress, but now she's getting nasty just had this message from her:

Now your the one at fault in faulsly describing the item so any loss you fall upon you and not me this is your FINAL CHANCE to resove this issue by giving me a FULL refund including the return postage if I get an offer of a full frfund within 24 hours I shal have no alternative but to file a dispute with ebay and LEAVE NEG' FEEDBACK witch i dont like doing so the ball is now in your court

I agree 100% with the buyer.

I would definitely leave you negative feedback if you did this to me. It's £6.70 for god's sake, just get over it, your auction VERY clearly states two dresses. Refund the money, let the buyer keep the dress and move on. Frankly it's a big hassle to send something back even if you do refund the cost, personally I'd just bin the item and give you negative feedback.

I have to say you have a LOT of negative feedback already.

I have to agree with several of the posters that you should accept the mistake was yours. Although there is only one dress shown in the picture and the title does state 1 dress, there are several references within the body of the listing in the plural, (dresses, 2 Brand New, and 2 descriptions).

For less than a tenner - I would accept the mistake, apologise and as a gesture of good will agree to let her keep the dress. Put this "sale" down to a well learned lesson and leave it with your integrity and reputation as a good seller intact.

She could not possibly leave negative feedback after that.

You win some, you lose some. This sale will remind you to check all future bulk re-lists, so I wouldn't say you have lost out completely.

    Just my opinion

Thanks for all you advice, I have now offered a full refund and told her to keep the dress. on a seperate note though I bought 81 tea sets as prizes for the school fete and they came as one giant teaset, and the postage cost was £25 which out of school funds is a lot of money
