    Hello
I have bassed this on your usage provided and on the standing charge tariff the price on teh fixed price is 2.515 per kwh gas and 8.834 per kwh elec and the standing charges are 14.68 gas and 18.08 elec this is all exluding vat @ 5% but the calcualtion below are ioncluding VAT.

    gas (17000) =£505.19
    elec (2800)= £329.01
    total =£834.20
avarge monthly dd £69.52 thought they would probably round up to the £70, £71.

Your usage is low but you would still go over the primary units so you would end up paying the same on NSC. Hope this helps.

This is a similar debate to the one that raged on MSE in 2005 about the BG fixed to April 2010 - except there were penalty clauses for leaving the BG tariff early.

With all fixed tariffs it was a gamble if they pay off, and will be a gamble in the future.

Those who took the BG tariff have done very well indeed and still have 2 years to run.

In fact I don't think a single fixed/capped rate tariff offered by any of the companies has turned out to be other than a success for those who elected to take the gamble.

Will the gamble pay off in future?? who knows.

However if I were a betting man(and I am) I would look at oil prices and be into the fixed to 2011 tariff as quickly as possible, for fear it will be withdrawn soon.
But it is still a gamble!!

More difficult to call would be jumping ship from a fixed to Nov 2008 price tariff to the 2011 tariff.

I’ve taken the gamble, just signed up to Scottish Powers fixed till 2011. I don’t think it’s much of a gamble but who knows. I use 14,400kWh gas and 6500kWh electric per annum and switching from Eon will mean I will be paying +£50 over what I am just now. With £30 cash back almost status quo but in the long term don’t think I will make a loss.

However with such a slow down maybe fuel use by industry will dry up (a wee bit) and fuel prices drop? Builders slow down in with new developments?

It is offers as an on-line tariff, it is fixed price though, but unlike BG no penalty if you were to leave the tariff

  • I've been doing some number-crunching and it appears that the fixed rate tariff would have meant an increase of £6.24 on our March bill (£73.15) - that's an increase of about 8.5%. Still worth going for?

8.5% now (fixed to 2011) versus possibly 35% later in the year - I know what my choice is (done)

Also as I understand there is no lock-in so if you can fix cheaper elsewhere later on, you can switch again if it suits
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
  • Argh! It won't let me change my service - presumably because I entered my meter readings this morning...
