Martin MSE recommends that you change to fixed price tariffs in this weeks newsletter. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/tips/30-04-2008/

Up to £72 cashback on Scottish Power is available if you sign up via http://www.cashbackkings.com

It's £72 on Quidco too - which leaves me a bit puzzled as to why Martin keeps banging on about the £15 to £30 you might get back from the comparison sites. Perhaps I'm missing something here.
  • Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it's better to take the 'no standing charge' rate or not?

SP's comparison table says I will save 4p on the Fixed Price NSC tariff but if prices are about to rise a lot then would I better taking the standing charge and the lower unit prices??

    I'm confuzzled.

If you use ABOVE the tier 1 rates (i.e those you pay more for) per annum - it really make little difference.

Most (if not all?) just divvy the annual eqivilant standing charge you would have paid up over the tier one units.

    i.e. SC is 20p / day = £73 pa

If tier 1 units are the first 1000 units pa (as an example) they will be £73/1000 (7.3p) per unit more expensive then the normal units.

I think it is because the comparrison sites are guaranteed to pay out, where as "cashback" sites aren't.

A bit like the mobile phone cashback - Martin's suggestion is to find the cheapest tarrif first and then view any "cashback" as a bonus or "nice to have"

The comparrison sites are doing the switch on your behalf and they pay you when it is complete, presumably with no questions asked or "un-tracked" transfers.

I changed my gas/electric suppler about 10 days ago to Sothern Electric, and gave them all my direct debit details which they confirmed was OK and they told me I would be switched over to them in about a months, 6 weeks time.

I had a letter from them this morning to say that my current supplier Scottish Power have raised an objection to them taking over my supply, and I will have to contact them to have it lifted.

Anybody know why, I thought that it could be done between the suppliers, as they always keep telling us on here. .
  • Is thare a debt outstanding with SP? (i.e. more than say 1 months DD)

AFAIK that is the usual reason for refusal.

    Dear Friends
This is my first post ever and i would appreciate advice. I am currently on SPs online Pricefall tariff(dual fuel) which guarantees prices from last year until Nov 08. Thus it is a good deal in that I will not pay the extra prices generated in February.

However I am wondering if it is worth moving to either the SP Fixed Price 2011 NSC or the standing charge equivalent NOW, or hanging on as long as possible. The dilemma is that if I move now I will pay extra, but the alternative is that I stay on my Pricefall tariff and risk SP withdrawing or increasing the price of their Fixed Price 2011 deal. Of course one cannot predict what offers will or will not be available in a few months.

Also I am a medium gas user and lower electricity user.
    Grateful for any advice

If only it was that simple. I switched from SP to SE via Moneysupermarket and had to chase and chase them before finally getting the promised £30. I very much got the impression that they were set up NOT to pay it if people forgot - as most probably would - and only paid out when they really had to. A nice little earner for them.

Perhaps "guaranteed" was too strong a description...

Basically the switching sites like uswict, moneysupermarket etc etc, arrange the switch for you so they are not tracking it via cookies on your computer to see if you actually went through with the switch.

On the other hand the cashback sites, like quidco, topcashback etc track your purchases and other activities via cookies on your web browser - they aren't actually doing the switch for you, just pointing you to a site and then checking for the right cookies on your system to decide if it happened or not.

The problem with the latter is that cashback sites don't always "track" properly.

Can you qualify what you mean by medium and low? (i.e what has been your last 12 months usage)

If you exceeed the tier 1 units you end up paying the same anyway, ie. say the tier 1 units are the first 1000 per year - it only makes a difference (more beneficial) to be on the NSC if you use less than 1000 units.

This is because the standing charge is just divvied up over the tier 1 units.

I am with Scottish Power and would like to change tariffs to their fixed price one. Would I still get cashback if I do it via Quidco or won't it work as I am already with SP
