Meeting new people with little or no money - Is it possible??

Options
Hi Guys.... I'm BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl:

I was a regular here until about 2/3 months ago. I needed a break to sort the rest of my life out. Which I have managed to do.

SOA still looking good :D , work ok ;) , Personaly life = terrible :o

So my question is:

Does anyone have any idea's on where and how to met new people?

I don't know if I am alone, but I am nearly 26 ( not sure when that happened!) and single (again ) and I really find it hard to met new people, be they friends or potential OH's.

Suggestions would be great. I've been told by my Mother to join the gym... I am not into exercise and can't really afford it.

Thanks in advance!! :D

  • what about old school friends, college/uni friends. Do you work ~ if so why not arrange something with them. What about sisters or cousins could you meet up with them do you get on? You could always join a group ~ exercise groups are always full or what about a part time job in a bar or pub you would get to meet people like that.

Most of my old school friends live away from home and work is difficult as there are loads of people here, but I don't deal with anyone enough to be able to say fancy a drink. Unless it's my department and then there are only 8 of us!

I'm in an awkward situation where a lot of my family have children so don't really have the time.

I do Salsa so have met some people through there, and enjoy that so I guess i need to find a few more things like that. And I am great at meeting people older than me. But think it's time for a few more people my own age.

    If that makes any sense.

  • Hi Lucy

SNAP!! - you have my life!

My OH left me a couple of weeks ago, so am now in the position where i have realised i really need to meet some new people. I have some good friends but they are in relationships of their own. No single friends to go on the pull with (and im not a meet-a-drunk-guy-in-a-club kind of girl to be honest).

I do go to the gym and will try to be more open to chatting to people while i am there. I am also going to join www.britmilfit.com/ which lookc like a good laugh.

www.plentyoffish.co.uk dating site it free but seems to be largely populated by weirdos.

I think that is what I am worried about. I feel safe here but have never ventured onto dating websites or things like that.

I don't have single friends either. And I don't do drunken men in clubs either. Last time I went clubbing I was about 10 yrs older than everyone else and stood chatting to the bouncer as he was more interesting than the people stood around!! I'm so sad.

I'll give those websites a look, I live in wiltshire so it's not exactly the hub of all activity!

My (much younger) friend married the bouncer she met like that! ;)

How about getting involved volunteering, a charity (chose one that will appeal to your age group) or politics? There is an old saying "activity breeds activity" which means that if you are busy doing something more things will happen, so you have made a good start with salsa.
Good luck and have fun in your search.

I highly recommend http://makefriendsonline.co.uk/mfo7/asp/join.asp I joined to meet new friends in my area after my marriage broke up, and within 2 weeks I had met the man of my dreams. I was skint at the time and spent my last £20 on joining up lol, well worth it :D

Its free to join but I think you have to pay to actually make contact with people.

Or what about getting a few evenings bar work? Get paid to meet people :D

Hi Lucy. keep an eye out in the local paper for things like walking groups etc, also have a look on Gumtree in your area!

I have got in with a BRILLIANT 'bunk barn' crowd from this website and we go camping every so often, our next trip is Snowdon at May bank hols, they are an amazing lot, very cheap weekends and no letchers!

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

Thanks for those. I will give them a try.

I have a Salsa class tonight so I am going to try and see if anyone fancies a drink after class or perhaps a night out sometime, I thought it would be a good way of getting to know them better and also maybe bumping into new people.

I let you know how things go. I think loads of people have this problem and don't talk about it.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the gym, I'm in a similar position by which I mean single and mid twenties (I'm a guy though *waves).
When I was looking round my gym they were all saying I'd make loads of friends etc etc. But I haven't. People just exercise with their ipods on or look in "the zone". It's ridiculous!

Facebook is where I have got a number of friends from, I seem to be good at getting dates on the internet, but put me in a pub/club situation and I freeze (apart from Saturday just gone - I was on fire).

But in all seriousness, I think a class is better than a gym.

For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!
