Only pack things that don't need ironing. If you are female, you only ever need one pair of flat shoes, one pair of heels and one pair of flip flops. If you are a man...well you'll be wearing shoes on the flight, right?

Pack, then look at your suitcase again, & take half of it back out.

(off to follow my own advise now...please send some packing fairies for the kids stuff...I hate packing for them. Why are they so messy?)

Best advice I ever had was: After you've packed, look at what's in your case. Then take half as much stuff and twice as much money!:D

Alanrowell...... perhaps you could share your wisdom with us in a new thread about how to pack.

    1) find out what weighs a lot in your bag - surprisingly it generally isn't your clothes, but the books, toiletries, shoes and the spare batteries / chargers for your personal electronics
    2) weigh your bag - you'd be surprised as to the weight of many cabin bags, I've seen weights of 11lbs!!! As a result I now use a cheap sports bag (£5 from Makro) which weighs under 2lbs
    3) Say goodbye to your jeans. They are useless on most holidays not only because they are heavy but they retain smells, are even heavier when wet & take an age to dry out

After that it tends to be thinking about how you can use clothing in more than one way - if you are a woman then coordinate all your clothing so you can mix and match - and you don't need that evening dress "just in case you go somewhere posh" and eight pairs of shoes with 3 inch heels, if you are a man - why do you need a shirt for every day of the trip or 5 different pairs of swim shorts. Also check the fabric - try to take things that will dry quickly

Finally once you've done that, work out how much you need for one week - and leave the rest. You can always wash smalls in the sink.

I was thinking the same at the weekend and weighted the Samsonite case (standard size) I always use on holiday. To my suprise it weighed 5Kg empty or one third of the Ryanair checked baggage allowance so its a holdall from now on.

  • Is their a problem if you go through security with 100ml bottles which do not have labels, ie you buy them from Boots and fill up at home?

I thought I would start a thread on the art of traveling with the dilema of a case weighing less than 20kg.

    Suggestions on what to pack?
    O.K. I will start....

Mix and match clothes with base colours
Minimize toiletries by buying or using small bottles for shampoo, etc
3 pairs of shoes, one to wear and 2 to pack
    1 beach towel

    Going beyond the basics -
    plasters and first aid kit
    travel wash for clothes
    Jewelry, scalfs,hair clips
    Reading book/puzzle book
    Travel alarm
    adaptor plugs and sink stopper
    sun screen and lotions
    sm note book and pen
    cameras
plastic bags for packed lunch or 101 other things
    clothes hangers

The list goes on. I was just reading some even take binoculars, kettle, iron
What will go in your case this year?????
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

You haven't included the clothes you are wearing - therefore you can remove one pair of shoes etc etc from what is packed

Things like binoculars & cameras should be in your hand luggage BTW or even in your coat pocket
