This is a bit of a naughty one but saves money, Instead of buying travel sickness tablets just get children to sit on a bit of newspaper throughout the journey (black and white print only no colour) explain to them that the carbon in the ink and paper soothes sickness and therefore they will not feel sickly. Or get them to draw circles around each wrist using a pen pencil lipstick or whatever and expalin that like the expensive wristbands this does the same job soothing the pressure points and will stop them from feeling sick... if they do start to feel sick they just rub wrist together and they will feel instantly better.

Both of these methods are an absolute lie but seem to work as long as they are explained scientifically enough they seem to work. children have something to concentrate on e.g rubbing wrists together and by sitting on the newspaper it stops them from getting out of their seat too often. I have always used this method with children and its always worked.

Yes its a bit dishonest but hey if it works thats got to be a good thing as a lot of the time travel sickness is only in kids minds.

I used to use ribbons etc to identify my case but everyone does that now. Last year purely by accident i was able to identify my cases as they were the ones with stickers stuck to them reading towels, quilts etc which i had forgot to take off after moving house ive decided to just keep them on, maybe you could do something similar? obviously dont just write towel, quilts or i will think they are my cases.

If you have solid plastic cases (we have black Samsonite) you can decorate them to make them stand out from the crowd. I've painted ours with white gloss paint and a stencil to decorate our cases.........so we can spot them from a long distance as they slowly wind their way along the airport baggage belt.;)

I agree Suewre, it would be a shameful waste of space in your cases.............especially on the journey back from the US with all your cut price purchases. ;D

You may not want to lay on a sun lounger and don't want to smuggle a hotel towel onto the sand.

Why not buy a cheapy beach towel while you're in the US or take one of your old towels from home? Then you can bin it/leave it behind to make space in your case for all of your purchases.
talking of needing space i am going to miami in january can i buy a lap top there will it work here . were would be best place /store to buy it . would it be legal as i have read some were that gift duty free is going up to £1000 ????? has it yet

    Money,fags,condoms - that's all I ever pack when I'm going on me hols !

And what about everybody else at the convent?
  • I do the ribbon on the case thing myself, I have done for donkeys years now. It works for me. I've also recently bought my neice a new case and took her in the stationers to get some transfers to customise it. It was a cheap way to keep her happy for a while!

As for shampoo/gels etc - I never buy the travel versions, as they are a complete rip off. Instead I keep empty small containers that I collect each time I stay in hotels. This way I can use the brands I like to use at home, and they take up very little packing space. I also collect the freebies I get on-line or in the supermarket etc. The only thing I do buy in for travelling is shaving gel, as once it's sprayed it starts to foam. I once squirted some into a small container, and when I opened it in the hotel, it looked like someone had thrown a custaed pie in my travel bag!

I never fold my clothes, I always roll them up. This way, when you unpack and hang up your clothes, there are fewer creases.
  • some great tips here for packing, i will be starting packing tomorrow so will have to get going:D

the limit from the states has not gone up to anywhere near £1000, actually it hasn't gone up at all. so if you bring a laptop back, you're liable for customs and tax charges at the airport.
  • While we are on the subject of packing...

For those of you in/near Manchester/Lancashire. Just outside Bury town centre you can pick up some great suitcase bargains at the ANTLER factory shop. I live about 2 miles from it, and have picked up many bargains for all the family.

It's in an old mill, on Alfred Street (a residential area), but the Antler website has location info. I recently bought a £200 case for £40, and a £100 one for £22. Having seen how baggage is treated at the airports, I don't believe in paying too much for them (I had to think twice about paying £40!, but it is a very nice case).

I was just wondering if anyone has any packing trips , this is our first real family holiday abroard ( been to the states to visit family, but not really a holiday as it was for other reasons) we will be off to turkey at the beginning of August.

I want to pack as light as possible, but make sure i take what i need for myself and my 2 kids, (Daughter 12 almost 13, and son 5, almost 6 years) we wil be away 14 nights B&B

Does anyone have any tips on what to take, for instance
Clothes wise, how many change of clothes should i take, i know i shoudl not take a change of clothes for every day of the week, but realistically how many changes of clothes for each person.

What should i pack and what shoudl i leave to buy when we get there ( bearing in mind on a tight budget)

How to pack, do i fold or roll clothes, which do you find the best method?

Or can you pass on any packing words of wisdom, anything will be appreciated

    Thanks in advance

    Sharon
