Most Renaults (as well as some peugeots, vauxhalls, citroens etc) have a special metal film in them which is supposed to stop the heat from radiating into the car, but as a side effect will screen gps signals. The antenna will work, just put it either on the back screen, or by one of the side windows, that should do the trick, or there may be a small area of the front screen which hasn't been coated.

I have a Garmin i3 street pilot on my Renault Megane windscreen. Never had any problems with picking up a signal.

Halfords have now dropped their prices on Sat Nav. You can see that Tomtom One is now available and at £279.99 equals the best deal around. As a web offer you can still walk into the store if it all goes wrong. Probably a safer bet than some of the online stores. Garmin I3 is down to £169.99 and Navman ICN 320 to £164.99
I cannot find any online codes or vouchers for Halfords to get an even better deal - can anyone help?

LadyK - Batteries are Lithium Ion batteries and you could probably buy a spare but may not be cheap. Alternatively buy a mains charger and don't go on journeys that last over 3 hours.....or buy a new car (not quite in the moneysaving principle though).

UK maps are already pre-loaded, the free month to tomtom services is an additional thing. Points of interest including speed camara warnings can be downloaded for free from sites previously mentioned in this thread. The 32MB card should be enough, but it depends on how much POI and extra mapping you download. But if not then buy a bigger one, they don't cost much these days. Transferring data is easy and done via USB cable and your computer.

    Happy hunting...

the sd card is not 32mb,thats the size of the internal memory, the sd card will be much larger (128 or 256mb)and will be enough for the updates as their trying to flog em to u after the first free month after all (dont do it).

full uk maps usualy take up around 100mb or just over,i have a 256mb sd card and have all the maps and 500+ pois and the speed camera database and a few other programs and still have just under half the card left over.

  • I purchased a Navman icn320 from PC World about 10 days ago. I have since had it changed 3 times as all I was getting was 'waiting for GPS'. Everytime I had it changed, I performed a 'factory re-set' which worked, but after turning it back on, guess what - 'waiting for GPS'.
I was becoming stressed out and ready to throw it out of the car until I found that if I held the sat nav out of the car the signal would then lock on, and theN attach to windscreen it was OK. I have to perform this stupid task every time I want to use the nNavman.
Clearly there was`a problem with the windscreen. But I have neither a heated front windscreen or tinted windows.
PC World suggested I upgrade to a TOM TOM but this was expensive, and I was not convinced the problem would go away.
I have now purchased an attena through ebay at £18, and hope this will cure the problem.
I only have a Renault Laguna, has anybody else encountered this problem?????

You have a metalised windscreen, however either side of the mirror is a black dotted area. This is not metalized and your gps antenna will see through this OK. Wether you can mount it so it fits there is another matter. If not then that is where your remote antenna will need to go.

    hi,

just bought the tomtom go 300 unit from currys site - £269.99 + free delivery

used the CURRYS20 code for money off the item and also 'kelkoo' for free delivery (saves £19.99 minimum - they charge more for specific dates).

couldn't find it any cheaper anywhere else so hope that helps someone (and that i haven't just done myself ;))

    cheers.

So with this then is it better to have the tomtom 300 at this price through currys or the new tomtom one at about £279? Now I dont know what to do

What do you mean you used kelkoo for free delivery? how do you do that? I went to kelkoo and went to the currys link and it still came up 19.99 delivery charge am I doing something wrong?

both are very very similer and either will suit u fine.£270 is about the cheapest you will get either for at the moment but its a cut throat market so they may drop a little more before xmas but not much.

bear in mind the tom tom one doesnt come with a supplied mains charging cable only the car cable.

personaly i would suggest going for the 300 if you can get it for £270 with free delivery as this is a proven unit and has lots of accessories already available and plenty of advise available if you have questions or problems.

@ Lady_K - sorry, wasn't clear - you use 'kelkoo' as a discount code just like the 'CURRYS20' code. I used the CURRYS20 one first then 'kelkoo'. Got the kelkoo one from the kelkoo site after doing a search for the best price.

I've also just spent half an hour umming and arring about whether to cancel and swap to the ONE unit instead. In the end decided to stick with a tried and tested unit rather than a brand new one - even if it does have a better GPS unit (apparently better in low coverage areas and less power hungry) - you get more bits with it too :)

  • I asked the forum for a discount code for Halfords. This was the reply -
    Great Savings at Halfords
Save 15% on bikes and cycle accessories and 10% on all other goods and services when purchasing Halfords gift vouchers in advance.
Call 08700 660511 and quote: 'bringme' (Lines are open 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm Saturday).

    http://www.getsetup.net/oubsnews/jan05.htm
it's near the bottom of the page.

Having looked at the Halfords website the online price is only 99p cheaper than instore - I can live with that! Will be getting myself a £280 TomTom One Sat nav for just £252. I don't think I will be able to beat that and it sounds like money saving to me! :j
  • doh!! forgot to add the link to the thread about using the bringme 10% discount...
