Just got an email about this Medion unit:
http://uk.aldi.com/special_buys/productnl_461.html
Anyone know what model this is? Any reviews?
I'd like to compare it with the Navman 510.0 -
The Aldi satnav is a Navigon unit (labelled as Medion or Transonic).
Think I'll wait for the Tom Tom One due to come out at the end of this month. It's already available in France, Germany, Holland & Italy where it's 100 euros cheaper than a Tom Tom 300.
Tech specs compared:
Tom Tom One
32 MB RAM - CPU: 380 MHz
3.5 inch, 320 x 240 full TFT colour LCD touchscreen
110 x 89 x 34 mm, 260 grams
Operating temperature: -10 to +55 °C
USB port and cable for PC connection
Internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery
Integrated GPS receiver based on SiRF Star III with 20 Channel All-in-view tracking and support for (not in package) active external antenna.
Tom Tom 300
200 Mhz ARM920T processor
32 MB RAM
SD Card for map storage
320 x 240 x 4096 colours 3.5” TFT screen
Internal Li-Ion battery
115mm x 92mm x 58mm, 310 grams
12 channel ‘All-in-View’ integrated GPS receiver
Internal antenna and support for (not in package) active external antenna
Couldn't make much sense of the other info. If someone can translate, I'd be grateful. Have a look at the Tom Tom site and select a language from the drop down (top right)

tomtom one looks good if it is SirfStar iii - very good new chipset gives a great 'lock' onto satellites. If its around £200 - then bargin imo.0

I have found this thread really useful, thank you to all contributors. I was prompted by this weeks Aldi sale of the Medion navigator. My Dad bought this last time it was on offer and he has been really impressed. I looked into the Navman 320 and the Garmin I3 as a result of this thread and visited Halfords for some "expert" advice. I was told that the Navman does not have the Points of Interest facility and so one cannot download info such as speed camera locations, National Trust house etc etc. The Garmin I3 received a slating, when he used it recently it lost the satellites on several occasions and more importantly when a road he was told to turn into was closed, the Garmin did not re-calculate the route, it just kept saying "turn around". For me this is a big no-no, I want dynamic route calculation (as it is called). The Aldi Medion also does not have POI. My decision is to buy a Tom Tom Go 300 which is apparantly a very good system. It costs £349 at Halfords but only £299 at Comet/Currys/Dixons. By using a link I can get £25 off at Dixons and therefore pay only £275 - a bargain! Certainly worth the £50 extra compared to the Aldi Medion and I think worth the extra cash compared to the Garmin and Navman. Cheapest is not always best! Hope this is of help to anyone else looking at Sat Nav.0

I haven't gone through this whole thread but hubby has got the Garmin i3. Paid £199 for it from Argos but now its down to £169.99 (I think) Its well worth the money in our opinion. Its lost satellite signal maybe 2 or 3 times since we've had it but soon finds it again.The_Major wrote:The Garmin I3 received a slating, when he used it recently it lost the satellites on several occasions and more importantly when a road he was told to turn into was closed, the Garmin did not re-calculate the route, it just kept saying "turn around". Obviously the person you spoke to had set the Garmin to tell them to turn around. You can set it to either tell you to "turn around" or you can set it to "recalculate the route" in the event that a road is closed or you take a wrong turn.
HTH:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
I too tried the Garmin I3 but took it back to Argos after 3 days. The maps were out of date, my own street did not exist(been here 12 years!) and lots of villages here in Devon couldn't be found via postcode. It also couldn't find the satellite for ages - 30mins then kept losing it. Then tried the Navman Pin570 on offer at Staples £229.00, but again found the maps out of date even though i had the latest updated version as i did with the Garmin. These things are probably ok in the main cities and towns but for our use was pretty useless. I haven't tried the TomTom Go - they are about to bring out a new on called 'TomTom One' so i don't know if its maps are any better?0

I've got the i3 and think its great! The maps used are produced by Navteq and are used by several other satnav/software companies. They will never be totally upto date, its just not possible.
For the price i don't think the i3 can be beaten, only difference from tomtom is the smaller screen and no touch screen.0
