I think the Garmin is much better than the navman because you can add Points of interest (POI) which include speed cameras, with the Navman you can't. Heres the links to compare the Navman and Garmin i3.

I've had the garmin for a few weeks and from what i can gather does everything the TomTom 300 does for halve the price:
    2D/3D mapping
    Full postcode search
Can be updated from the Garmin website
Route planning can be adjusted to avoid motorways/small roads etc.
    Day/night mode
Uses AA batteries, so easy to change if running low or use car mains lead.

the big difference with the tom tom 300 etc is the mapping software and the size of the screen which is twice as big as the garmin, also the tom tom is worked by touch screen only(no need for a scroll wheel etc)which makes it realy simple to use(big screen buttons) for the less technical people out there.

whether this makes it worth twice as much is very debatable

i bought a tom tom 500 in the argos misprice mistake for my 70 year old dad who knows nothing about modern technology and he was navigating with it within a few minutes.i have a pda based sat nav and he would have struggled with that.

if you dont mind the small screen(some people prefer it)the garmin is good value but if your not technical and you can afford a tom tom go it may be worth your while.

what are the minimum specs for a mobile phone to run tomtom 5? obviously it needs a card slot and gprs i'm guessing? anything else?

This is an ad I have just come across, you get a phone as well and can reduce the rental after 6? months. Maybe not the the cheapest but an alternative.

A word of warning or perhaps not
There are some extremely cheap sat nav units approx 100 euros delivered on ebay, they appear to be shipped from china. All the well known brands
    I smell a rat because:-
    1 very very cheap
    2 no payment via paypal
3 feedback from previous sales seems suspicious, all previous customers are 10 rated users that have suddenly become ex members in the last couple of days.

any one used these fellas before?
Dont want to give a direct link in case it is a con, but type sat nav in the search box and within a page or two you will see the ads. all priced up in euros.
Dont know if I'm missing a bargain or being true to my gut instinct about a con.
    answers on a postcard please.
  • suggest you do not buy anything from mobilefun.co.uk as they are a con... products are faulty and they do not reply to emails or phone calls
  • I have to recommend 2 stand alone GPS Sat Nav systems and 2 PDA sat Nav systems for the sales and delivery guys at work. From reading about 20 pages I think everybody agrees that the tom tom 300 or 500 is a safe one to recommend?

I need help with what PDA. A friend has said get the HP Ipaq. A couple of things I picked up from the site is that I would like it to have a 7 digit post code search and a built in antenna. So any ideas. Price is not the only consideration. Don't mind paying a bit extra. Its me going to get the hassle if there are any problems. Any ideas? or can anybody sum up the 28 pages
if i had known then what i know now

I'd like to buy the Navman ICN 520, for an Xmas present. Been searching away tonight to try to find the best price (excluding ebay, wouldn't buy from there). Anyone point me in a cheap direction?
    Thanks
