anybody used the external antenna to good effect with the i3 or the TTG500. Mrs. Gambler has said she will get one for my birthday in a couple of weeks but I have a Renault so they won't work through windscreen.0

Lady_K wrote:Does anyone know which one model RZ1710 is out of the tomtom gps in car navigation systems? As thats all it says so I don't know if its the 300 500 or 700, I doubt if its 700 as it would prob be more money but they also said it needs internet access when I rang to ask but they didn't know which one it was either. Do all of them need internet access? I thought everything was on ready to go?
Do all of these have speed camera warnings? and can you use them for navigation out of the car too? Its just hard to choose which one. I know the tomtoms are popular but I heard the customer support was really bad so I'm not sure which to get
hi
rz1710 is the model number of the pda(i pac rz1710)nothing to do with tom tom.this unit can run most gps software but if u choose tom tom it will run tom tom navigater 5.the 300,500,700 u mention are stand alone units not pda based.
u need to load the speed cameras on yourself.
u cant use the 1710 out of the car as u need a gps antenna to work it(other pdas have one built in)
send me a link to where uve seen the 1710 or if u need any more info please pm me.

Well as I have previously mentioned, I got a Mio 168 pocket pc for just under £300 from ebay. This included TomTom 5 navigation software. I have found the navigation to be excellent, full 7 digit postcode, along with the fact that you can view points of interest such as nearest atm, petrol station etc.
If you take a wrong turn (because you wernt listening properly) then it instantly recalculates your route for you.
The Pocket PC has built in GPS, which means you can also use it on foot, on your bicycle etc. There is also the flexibility to get extra maps for doing stuff like rambling if that is your thing. I have a Mondeo with heated front screen, yet the built in antenna works fine (although they do include a plug in extra antenna as well).
I downloaded all the speed camera locations off the net for free as well and the system will both vocally and visually warn you well in advance.
As prev mentioned, as it is a pocket pc, you can also play games, use word, play mp3s, use it as an adress book, calandar or even play movies etc.
I think it is a fantastic bit of kit for the money and have nothing but praise for it so far.
Scouse, if you want to know any more details let me know.0 -
Sounds good Spud, what about wiring it up and does it come with all the kit?

i agree spud thats the set up ive got except i have the older tom tom 3 software + a postcode program which i prefer,i can also recommend it,more flexible and a bit cheaper than tom toms stand alone units.
scouse theres no wiring to be done it should have the full kit,u will have to do some downloading(maps, speed cameras etc)but its easy enough.

If anyone is a 'dab hand' at explaining or has put maps (on CD) onto an SD card then could they have a look at my question in 'Techi Forum' - "SatNav Maps"
Many Thanks0
