Burlesque_Babe wrote: »ground up chick peas is classed as abuse of free food. Basically it's about making something which is free into something easier to eat lots of and not really notice (sorry, not a good explanation!)
erm........ok........if you squeezed 5 oranges into a glass of juice and drank it, that wouldn't be free because the thinking is you wouldn't eat 5 oranges one after the other and the body isn't processing the food in the same way so if you made a smoothie from strawberries, bananas, apples, oranges etc in the morning, they would have to be synned because you were pureeing them.
Same for the chick peas. Grind up (say) 6 ounces and you'd possibly eat a lot more of it than if you were given a plate of 6 ounces of chick peas and again, the body isn't processing the food in the same way.
I would say the mousse is fine - the SW mag. has an almost identical recipe in this month, but apparently the cake is seen as abuse of free food.
I'm sure consultant will give a much more detailed explanation!
Going to disagree (:o) with you on the chickpeas example as there is a recipe for houmous on the SW website which uses blended chickpeas, I think its a really icky area to explain ... I would think its more along lines of the person who emptied several bottles of Fry Light into a pan to try to fry chips, or when things like packet/tinned meat in gravy are blended down to make gravy. Also need to consider things like fruit will not be regarded as free if mashed/pureed (for example I think you can slice a banana on your toast but if you mash it on the toast it becomes syns or the orange juice example above)
Oh here is the dip recipe if anyone misses houmous!Houmous dip Anne-Marie Williams from Wrexham, North Wales found a fantastically Free way of making houmous. “Ready-made houmous contains tahini and oil which means it has a Syn value.” Ann-Marie says. “I’ve adapted the recipe to make a delicious homemade houmous that’s Free on Green days.
Serves: 2
Syns per serving: Free on Green and Extra Easy
Preparation and cooking time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced
Fry Light400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
20-50ml water
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tbsp lemon juice
Salt to taste
Method:
1. Place the sliced red pepper on a baking tray sprayed with Fry Light and roast until softened.
2. Once the pepper is cooked and cooled, place all the ingredients in a food processor and blend, adding more water if necessary to create a smooth paste.
3. Add salt to taste and serve with chopped up carrot batons or any of your favourite Free vegetable sticks!0 -
have to say, I never thought about chick peas (ground up) being seen as abuse of free food until consultant pointed it out last time I had a go at SW and said I was going to do the cake.
Didn't really matter though because
a) the cake wasn't very nice and
b) I thought you just mashed them, so the cake tasted most odd and I only ate 1 slice!! :rotfl:
this isn't the exact post, but it's a list from consultant of some of the affected foods.

I wonder if its the cooking thing, or making/using them to replace something, like mashed as flour for the cake or making peanuts with them .. whereas Houmous is something they are 'known' for? (chickpeas that is!)
The reason I pointed out the recipe is because it is on Slimming Worlds official site .. and its a bit daft if they are endorsing something as free .. if its not etc .. although I am not personally a fan of chickpeas, can just about munch a good houmous .. but the thought of them in a cake sort of makes me a little green :rotfl:
I think personally, if something is a little controversial in relation to if it is syns or not and no one can definately say a yes or no, either avoid it .. or have only a little of it .. dont base your eating around it just in case0 -
I also say avoid the chickpea cake as it does taste odd and I lurve chickpeas!

Did someone actually do that or were you just using that as an example? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: If they did - you gotta love the inginuity (sp?) of it!
Sounds like a complicated business either way!
Diet not going so well for me this week - it's the first anniversary of my dads death today, so ended up taking mum out to dinner last night, and getting a takeaway tonight! And I'm afraid to say SW couldn't have been further from my mind! I was too busy indulging in a bit of self pity!
I'll try harder over the weekend, and at least hope for a STS on Monday!
Massive well done to BB and Ossireo!! :T :j And what a great advert for EE - I might just give it a go next week!!

Evening all just had my tea - home made sausage casserole with veg. Our local butcher does syn free sausages and me trying to be DFW decided to only buy 6 (small) ones which would have been fine except I used 2 tins of toms and 2 onions so basically had tomato and onion with the odd piece of sausage! Oh well think of all the superfree food Ive eaten!
Hoping for a much better weigh in this week - having 7 red days to kick start me again after 2 weeks of EE - week 1 - maintained and week 2 gained one. The 8 weeks prior to that I lost 28lbs - think I have been overdoing the carbs so giving it a rest for a week.
Well done on everyones amazing losses x x xPay Debt by Xmas 16 - 0/12000

Re the frylight thing - I believe loads of people actually did this. Another example is the tinned macaroni and cheese used to be free - then people started blending it and using is as a cheese sauce! Now its syned:mad::rotfl:When life hands you lemons, ask for tequilla and salt and give me a call!!!0
