  • just been on the nationwide site and input all our detail.... for quote ... which unfortunately !!! .. was very competitive ... but can't see any mention on it about the breakdown cover ....that is says needs to be included on other quotes .
on the final page with the price it shows excesses and legal cover etc but no mention of the breakdown cover ??
  • just had a look at nationwides terms and conditions .. pages 4 & 5 show requirements for the "double discount" ... says nothing about requirement for legal cover or breakdown cover ??

    OK! edit:
called them back - the cooling off period begins on the policy start date, NOT on the payment date. Brilliant! CazyDee, I see no reason why we can't send in our claim form after we've purchased, but before the start of the policy - meaning we'll have plenty of time to cancel the policy within the cooling off period if our claim fails!
Just wanted to check that you haven't done it yet!!!!

If your insurance is due to expire in November then of course you can buy a Nationwide policy to start in November. But... you can only claim for Double the Difference AFTER the policy starts. Since this offer ends 31st October - and your policy would start in November - the DtD offer won't be available!

    So here's the plan...
    - just frozen my current car insurance from midnight tonight (will get a full month's rebate)
    - take out NW insurance online tonight with immediate effect (I'm pretty sure the 14 day 'cool-off' will start from purchase date)
    - Get the cheapest quote set up online with Bell and then wait for NW paperwork.
    - As soon as I receive the NW paperwork - print off the Bell online quote + Terms etc and post back to NW - recorded delivery.
    - chase and chase on the phone for confirmation that all has been received and that claim has been accepted
    - wait for £1,000+ cheque !

    Have I missed anything?

'Unfreeze' your current insurance after the NW comes to an end to maximise the cover period :)
  • Cazydee, NW told me that the DtD offer would be valid on a policy starting 11th Nov, provided I actually paid for it before the end of October. But you're right, I don't think it's worth the risk. I'm going to cancel my policy asap and buy one from NW. Will let you know how I get on.

    Good luck!

Just out of interest.... to everyone who's taken NW up on their offer...

After banking the cheque, did you stick with NW or cancel their policy and go with the cheapest insurer ?

Unfortunately after all that it's a non-starter for me.
NW's compulsory excesses add up to £500 and the cheaper quotes I found only allow a maximum of £350 (voluntary and compulsory).
So - I'm out of the running. But I did my homework and this might help others looking to take the plunge:

According to posts on this forum - NW has accepted and paid out on claims using the following insurers:

Admiral, Elephant, Bell, Norwich Union, Yes, Esure, AA, Churchill & Abbey

Surely if NW offer a worse excess they will still honour the deal - that should decrease their charge rather than increase it. I would call them if I was you.
