My insurance ends on 5th November. Having spoken to a customer service agent, they said my claim would be fine as long as I purchase the policy before October 31st. Looking in their T&C it states

'This offer applies to Nationwide car insurance purchased by 31 October 2005 and any claim subsequently made up to and including 28 November 2005'

This would suggest that I could purchase their insurance before the end of the month and still be eligible for the discount as long as I submitted the claim before 28 November.

Why do people think that this would not be possible?

ACK! You're probably right, but I foresee difficulties in interpreting this if and when NW decide to start weaseling out of claims...

I played it safe because I had a large claim. :D

Thanks again, any idea about the car hire cover?

    What about it?

(I didn't add/change anything regarding breakdown cover/car hire or anything else...)

Ah righto...good stuff. I was just concerned because when I clicked through to the final quote it gave a big list of add ons.

Anyhoo, thanks for all your help, you are a star. I'm going to set this in motion tonight and see what happens!

I'm in the same situation - insurance expires 12th Nov. I called them and was told that the offer would be valid provided the policy was paid for before end Oct, and claim was made before end Nov.

However, I called back again (just to be sure), and asked the exact same question to a different customer service agent. This time I was told that it would NOT be valid. I told the customer service agent that I had previously been told otherwise, and he sounded annoyed and just said that I'd better just go and ask inside a branch.

He also added that the offer would not be valid if NW decided I had known about a cheaper policy at the time of taking out NW insurance! There is no mention of this in the terms and conditions though. To be honest, I think he just made this up because he was annoyed.

Personally, I'm not going to risk having a policy start in November because of the contradictory answers I've received. I'm cancelling my current policy tomorrow instead.
  • Has anyone tried this with cis insurance, cos it's really cheap. 45% discount for newbies. https://www.cis.co.uk The guy on the phone said that the internet cover covers all the criteria but the full cover details would not be sent out until after the policy has been taken out! i have a leaflet of their none internet cover and this does seem to match nationwides cover too. but the quotes have to be like for like ( internet-internet, telephone- telephone) so i was wondering if anyone had tried this with CIS internet.

Bell is cheapest for me, but I understand I need to add on bits to make the cover the same as Nationwide? Is it just Car Hire Cover I need to add on?

Also, how long does this offer last for?

No - I think Bell includes Car Hire cover. No need to add anything nor is there an option to! I thinik that may be the Norwich Union policy you are referring to.

Taken out NW car insurance even though i found cheaper cover from Swift Cover. Spent £100 more!! GULP!!!
Should reclaim £200 then. Having trouble getting claim form at the moment, NW call centre says only the local Branch can issue a claim form, if i go in in person! Any one else had this prob?
I hope this works, i'm getting a bit nervious.
By the way, has anyone noticed how NW Motor schedule is exactly the same layout as Directline. Are they both part of Churchill?
Will let you know how i get on.
Good work Martin. Lets SCREW them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 :T

    UPDATE: 26th October 2005
Have Recieved Cheque for £168 so car insurance this year has cost £148!!
Submittted ths Swiftcover Quote, but had to make sure it was exactly the same, this included Protected NCD.
    Summary:
Took out NW insurance for £317.10
    Found cheaper for £232.98
    Difference of £ 84.12

    Recieved Cheque for £168.24 !!!
    Well Pleased
Thanks Martin, Good luck everyone with a claim. Its Worth the Gamble :T
  • Just received a letter saying that my claim has been accepted, and I'll receive a cheque soon.

The insurance with Nationwide cost £375 and the quote I got was from Dial Direct and was for £225, so I'm expecting a cheque for £300. meaning my insurance was £75!!!

    Thank you Martin
  • My renewal is in November as well after which I'll have 4 years' no claims. If I cancel my current policy now though, won't I effectively lose the no claims bonus becuase I've only completed the last 11 months and 2 weeks of the 12 months?

If I freeze the policy rather than cancel, presumably that lets me complete the 12 months and retain the no claims? But if I do that and start the policy with Nationwide in October I won't be able to say I have 4 years' no claims...???

    Any ideas?

    Edit:
-- Just phoned them and was told that no, I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the offer if the policy was to start In November, even if I did buy it today --

-- Phoned them again and this time they say yes, I could buy today with a policy start date in November and still make a claim within 28 days of the date of purchase --
