So just what is the legal aspect of this, can we all, as a group, "insist" on the deal going through?

No, it will only have been ring-fenced and removed from your available funds figure. This is standard practice in e-commerce and any other from of ordering using plastic.

The money is still in your account, just not available to you.

This will happen every time you order something by an automated system.

Basically, their automated transaction system (via the retailer's particular transaction processing company) interrogates the Visa, Mastercard or banking clearance system organisation(BACS), to see if you have (in this case) £5odd available in your account, so that the purchase would be able to proceed. The clearance system then reserves that amount if it's there, or reports insufficient funds if it's not, enabling the retailer's automated system to add your request to the huge pile, or reject it if no funds are available.

This money can be ring-fenced in your account for upto 7 days. After 7 days, if the supplier hasn't then requested that £5odd to be transferred to them, the money then by default returns to your available funds figure. It doesn't leave your account.

If this didn't happen, you would be able to have a spending frenzy on plastic at a weekend or especially a bank holiday weekend, just like you could a few years ago and go overdrawn etc, without your bank knowing until the next working day.

I placed an order for one about 9.45pm last night and as of 8am this morning I have still have no e-mail confermation and no money has been taken/reserved from my account.

I'm going to 'forget about' this one and be surprised if it all works out.

Looks like they've gone into headless chicken mode and just deleted the page with the TV details on it. Expect correction to be made later this morning. :D

  • Thank you for your order

Unfortunately your card has not been authorised for the following item(s). This amount has not been charged to your card.

Bush 28in Integrated Digital TV, DVD Rec 1 £ 0.49

I received two emails from Homebase this morning. One gave me an order number, the other said my card hasn't been authorised. I guess the card that wasn't authorised was for the order that I wanted delivered to someone else's address, although I gave my billing address as my contact details.

    Thank you for your order

Strange, really, as the card I used to order the tv to be delivered elsewhere has had the money reserved by Homebase.
