What a great thread, and thank you so much to Elle for starting it and keeping it up to date.

My family & I will arrive in playa blanca on the 26th June and my son really wants to do the volcano trip, what sort of price will it cost a family of four? I have no plans currently to hire a car.

    Hi

I know this is an old thread but just wondered if anyone can tell me how close shops & small supermarkets are to H10 Rubicon Palace?

I stayed in Playa Blanca in 2009, and walked along the promenade as far as the ferry port and I just wondered how much further it is to the H10 Rubicon Palace. Gogle says about 40 mins, most reviews say the same. So is there any shops nearer, Elle mentioned Faro Park, is this closer to Rubicon Palace, from your description it sounds like it is. Are there shops here where we could buy supplies such as water that would be a closer walk back or would we be better to get the bus to the resort where the hipodino is (i've located this one on the map).

    Thanks

p.s. - if anyne has been to Rubicon Palace I would be happy to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks

Hola magfo. The main shops etc are a 30 minute walk along the prom from you... or a 5 minute drive. There is also a bus right outside your hotel, which will get you there in no ntime. Stay on your hotel side of the road for going into town, and opposite for heading out to Faro Park.

Your nearest proper shop is Spar at Punta Limones. Jump off the bus at the ferry port (just after a roundabout, and walk back up the road that the bus has just come down. It's 90 seconds walk on your left. Or carry on same direction as the bus, and go down the right hand fork when the road splits and find Hiperdino down there.

Faro Park is about 20 minutes' walk... and 5 minutes on the bus, but the supermarkets there are really only any good for emergency rations. Better to head into town and ... ... ... ... actually, if you're staying at the Rubicon Palace, then you won't need a proper shop will you? Nearest bars at at La Mulata, which is a small row of bars and restaurants bewteen your hotel and Natura Palace. Go out the back of the Rubicon onto the prom and turen left for speedier access than the road.

    Enjoy! xxx

Ange and Robodan - I am so sorry I missed your questions - I hope you had a good time! xxx

    Hello?

I'm so glad this thread is still alive. Thank you so much.

I read it a lot last year when thinking of going to Lanzarote but lack of funds prevented a holiday. This year, however, is a wee bit different. I'm going to Playa Blanca and I' VERY excited.

Elle, I wonder if I can ask you a couple of questions. I apologise if they've been asked before. I did a search on my accommodation (Coloradamar Bungalows) but couldn't find anything. Have you ever heard of them?

My hugest dread in the world, no matter where I go on holiday, is that I can't sleep for the noise at night:o. I am a riot but that's how I am.

Also, can you tell me how much, in your opinion, we should budget to spend. I'm a notorious skinflint and I want to be careful I don't spoil my family's holidays whilst I pennypinch myself into a frenzy :rotfl:

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

HI Fletch - yeah... a nicely lonjg running thread this one. I actually got the notification this time, which is good!

I'd not heard of Coloradamar Bungalows... but once I looked at their websites I could see where they are, roughly.

Don't worry about noise - these are far enough away from the town centre that you just wn't hear bars and discos. Of course, you may be unlucky and get noisy neighbours for the holiday... but you run that risk anywhere. The area itself is quiet.

As far as budget goes... hmmm... How long is a piece of string, honey? I can give some sample prices... but it really does vary. If you eat out a lot, thehn that will be more pricey. Don't be scared to substitute your UK brand names for Spanish ones in the Supermarkets. You're really close to Ropers Supermaket there... which is great for your meat, fish, veggies and frozen stuff. Hiperdino isn't too far either... better for bread, milk, condiments, tinned stuff, and jars.

Nearest place to get plenty of choice to eat is the Rubicon Marina (half hour walk)... and a further walk of 15 minutes will have you in the town centre. It's cheaper to eat on the High Street in the town centre than on the seafrot, or the Marina. But obviously the latter 2 have the views.

Outside Ropers are 2 cafes. The one opposite does fabulous Gambas Ajillo (galric prawns). Both are reasonably priced.

Taxi into town - probably about €4.50 each way
Bus - €1.30 per person each way
    Large Beer at nearby Marina - €3 - €4
Branded spirit and Mixer - €5
    Meal for 2 (2 courses, 2 drinks each) - €50 - €90

If you give me some specifics, I'll see how I can help. Hopefully the above has been of some use in the meantime

There are some noisy bars at the marina (karaoke, yuk!) but you are far enough away for that not to be a problem.

I have to contradict Elle. Your bungalows are about 10 minutes' walk from the marina, and from there it's another 25 minutes' walk to the centre (I stayed at the Hotel Volcan last year, right by the marina).

Can't help you on penny-pinching I'm afraid, I always take the view that if I'm spending hundreds or thousands of pounds on getting to and staying at a place I'm not going to ruin it by Scrooging while I'm there. But I can tell you that if you like a beer the nicest (and one of the cheapest) places to drink is on the lawn at the golf centre about 5 minutes' past the marina (towards the centre).

Thanks both, I appreciate your replies.

We are going for 1 week only. Me, husband, my son (15) and his pal (14). We're not huge drinkers to be honest. Husband, however, seems hell bent on the snorkelling, scuba diving, sky diving, Bear Grylls-like escapades. Me? just a nice walk and an ice cream would suffice.

He wants to hire a car too so we can get around the island. We're self catering in the bungalow. I don't need swish, but I do need quiet. I've wanted to go to Playa Blanca for a long time but I do want to put something back into the local economy. I won't be a total tightwad (I will practice). My husband, however, thinks you can ONLY have a good time if you've emptied your wallet.

Hi Bazster - are you sure you are thinking of the same place? These bungalows are right up by Ropers, at the entrance to Los Coloradas... which is past the Gran Castillo Hotel, almost at Papagayo. I guess you could cut it down to about 20 - 25 minutes if you came along the main road, but the promenade is way prettier. Fab call on the Hesperia Golf Bar though - nice for us PB'ites to wriggle our toes in the grass... as we don't get the opportunity very often.

Lots of snorkelling opportunities for your hubby, Fletch - anywhere along the coast. He can buy a cheapie snorkelling kit from one of the shops in the town centre. The Papagayo beaches are only a 10/15 minute walk from you (follow the path next to the Papagayo Arena Hotel to the left of Ropers) in the opposite direction to town. Scuba will cost you... but there's a good place at the Marina. Head around the right hand edge, towards the red & white lighthouse, and it's on the right. SkyDiving - not a chance lol.

Best ice cream? I wouldn't know as I don't really have a sweet tooth... but my father in law swears it's the place next to the taxi rank in the town centre. He walks half an hour each way to get one when he's here... every day!

Your fella is right to suggest hiring a car - you get to see much more, and it's cheaper than doing the tours.

    Enjoy - and don't worry!!

Fairy nuff, I reckoned it was nearer the marina than Papagayo, but if it's the other way round then yes, 10 minutes is a bit optimistic. But I stick to my guns about the distance from the marina to the centre: I walked it both ways almost every evening of our holiday, and only a jogger or a cyclist could do it in 15 minutes!

Loved that Indian restaurant on the sea front. A bit pricey but has to have some of the best views of any curry house in Europe!
