Does anyone know where to get insurance to cover personal possessions when travelling - medical cover not needed so travel insurance doesn't really fit the bill.

    Thanks

Probably under your home insurance, depending on the policy wording. Mine covers personal possessions worldwide.

I have just renewed my house and contents insurance for next year. This time I have switched to the post office. I saved about £25 on the premium I paid to Esure last year (for the same cover). Plus I should get £50 cashback.

Goodbye Esure, I will visit you next year for a quote.
  • (Just a shame that I've been over-paying for so long.)

    Was paying:
£18.45 per month (x12 = £221.40 p.a.) for Buildings cover through our building society (I know, I can hear you screaming "Idiot!")
    £63.78 yearly renewal for Contents
    Total was = £285.18 p.a.

    Now:
    Lloyds Buildings = £64.62, less £45 GreasyPalm cashback = £19.62 p.a.
    Barclays Contents = £81.00, less £47.50 GreasyPalm cashback = £33.50 p.a.
    Total now = £53.12 p.a.

    Total saved = £232.06

(Accepted that I should have been away from the building society ages ago for the Buildings, and also I've been over-paying for accidental damage.)
  • Been insured with Liverpool & Victoria for some years. Checked out their prices every year and until last year they were always significantly cheaper than anyone else. However last year split Buildings to RIAS and Contents to L&V to get the best deal.

Started the process again last week as my renewal is due at the end of the month and the combined deal was still looking good until I rang HSBC and quoted their "at least £60 off" offer.

They told me their standard pemium would be about £900  then quoted me £316 for a combined policy which was £170 less than my renewal quote! :j

I'm just reading the policy details but unless I find anything strange in there then HSBC will have a new customer in a few days. :D

    Definitely worth a call!

Pretty good, but for next year, check out Quidco, rather than GreasyPalm. They would have given you £90 and £95 cash back, so the cash back would have fully covered your premiums, with £39 surplus!

  • Thanks. Hadn't heard of Quidco before.
I've just had a glance at their site, and their cashbacks are amazing. Going to sign up now.
  • Used the method and saved a bundle for our combined Building and Contents. Annual premium with N.U was £532 which I suspected was too high. A search on Confused.com confirmed my suspicions with lowest quote of £278 on as near like to like basis as the limited questionaire would allow. Then went on to Post Office site for qoute which came out at £278 as well. Then phoned Post Office to fine tune policy to our needs and it came out to £307, we did increase our cover and lower the excess payments on the new policy.
So we signed up for the new policy with the Post Office saving us over £200 and will also get £50 cash back from the Post Office to boot!!!!
Thankyou Moneysavingexpert for opening my eyes to how money can be saved with a relatively small amount of effort.
Oh and our new policy is with Norwich Union!!! DOH!
    A Happy Roverman.

After having saved money on my car insurance thought i'd try the same with the building and contents which is also up for renewal. I've always been happy with the Pru and didn't really want to change but read on MSE that if you go into your existing company's website and get a quote as a new customer you can make a saving. Well I did this and yes it said over £100 saving - couldn't believe it!

I phoned them and they said it was correct and that although would be more sense to let me renew at that price I had to do it as a new customer with a new policy. Only thing was that for monthly payments I now have to pay a 10% fee which i didn't on my existing policy and I increased my cover to include accidental damage on the building so in the end I've saved nearly £80 Would definitely recommend anyone to do this - can't believe it was so simple! :j
