  • I'm insured through CSIS the civil service insurance scheme. Unfortunately it is only for civil servants, teachers and a few other professions but combinded contents and building insurance is £15 per month. I pay monthly and there is no interest. It costs exactly the same as paying the whole year in one lump sum. They have a website but you will have to google it.

It's worth mentioning that when you work out your rebuild cost you should also be including the cost of legal fees and applications for various planning and building approvals, costs to 3rd parties (disbursments) etc. This will bump it up by a few grand.
  • Blackadr - your deal sounds good to me, but you should look at the insurance providers at Quidco.com where you can receive up to £125 cashback ON TOP of internet discounts.
  • Following this weeks email from MSE I contacted Barclays for a quote. Initial quote was £345, my existing insurance quote was £268. Barclays reduced their quote to £267, are sending me a cheque for £50 AND I can by monthly instalments interest free! :D:D
  • Simular story to the rest. I got my renewal building and contents insurance documents through from Direct Line and was quoted £310 which was a increase of £30 from last year but I'd made no claims.

I then went onto the direct line web site and got a quote for the same cover for £152 and therefore already half price. I rang them and cancelled my account to stop it being automatically carried on (they were willing to give me the online price but I said no). I then went via Quidco who are offering £75 cashback. So I signed up via them and that's another £75 off the already £152 to give in me a yearly price of £77 for the same policy by the same company.

Funny how they don't tell you this?

Why pay £310 when you can get the same thing from the same company for £75?
    Regards,
    Dave

If only I had a pound for every time I used the thanks button :D

I've just had the same experience with Direct Line. My renewal notice came on Monday for £605.28. I went straight to their web site and was qouted £436.00 but as I had trouble with my internet I phoned them and got it for £373.80 for exactly the same cover and amounts as they had sent on the renewal notice. Very happy about that outcome!!!!!

  • I have just used the link to get a quote for building & contents insurance. The Post Office quoted me £291 compared to the AA renewal notice I just received for a total of £490.
I called the AA to see if they would be prepared to haggle...'No can do sir, that's the best we can offer'.

They said I would incur a £50 penalty per policy (2 of) to cancel my policies. Is this right? Can they do this?I only got the renewal notcie yesterday. Am I not entitled to a 'cooling off' period, in which you can cancel at no cost?

Still, either way, I'm £100 better off even if I do have to pay the cancelation charges. Happy days!:

    Cheers MSE:beer:

Yes. I have just read Martin's article on Home Insurance. Then I went to the calculator and entered a few details as requested. For contents it came up with an astounding 97,500 pounds. As you say, I have had contents insurance for many years but for nowhere near that value. Then Martin says that New for Old would be based on the the price you paid for the item on which you are making a claim. Is he saying that if you paid 500 pounds years ago and the replacement value is now 1000 pounds that they will pay out only 500 pounds? Where is the New for Old cover there? It might be cheaper to have no cover at all.

Am due to renew building and contents insurance. It's gone up by nearly £50 with Saga. Can anybody recommend a comppany, please? Thanks

I have just got my home insurance quote through the post.
my first step was to go onto moneysupermarket.com this gave me some quotes. I then phoned my insurer, who after a bit of persuasion price matched the lowest quote that I had. I do this every time, for every insurance. I know that loyalty counts for nothing in the insurance world!
