being a bt broadband user mine has to be on all the time as my phone is routed through it as is my bt vision box. So no choice on all the time.My opinions are purely my own act on them at your own risk :think:0

Used to run broadband routers 24/7 when I was downloading a lot but now I'm outta uni and into work I'm lucky if I get a couple of hours a day to surf at home, so it stays off unless I'm using it.
More secure (although set up correctly they're pretty impenetrable), less of a fire risk, and more friendly to our little tree living friends.
You can get devices to plug between your electricals and your wall socket which will tell you the amount of power passing through it, such as this one from Maplin.

You can then test with the device on, in standby and off to see what the thing costs you. My dad recently tested his projector when in standby mode and it used 70% of the power it did when turned on. He now turns it off!!!0 -

wait until Lidl do theirs again - less than £10 I seem to remember.0 -
£25  wow!

I got a Maplins one, brand new from ebay, cost me a lot less than £25. Spending £25 on an energy monitor is probably going to be a bit self defeating in terms of finding where to save money on energy usage. I agree that you're better spending less on it."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

my router is turned off when not in use.. which is prob 70% of a day(24hours).. also i use the bye-bye-standby controller.. so i can remotely switch on/off, which is quite handy for the wireless laptop(lazy, saves legs) also saves electric on the printer/speaker/cordless headphone psu's etc.. that used to be left on too..
btw byebyestandby control's many other items in my home.. can reduce your elec usage.. http://www.byebyestandby.com/ (no i dont work for them lol i just think its a great product and worth looking at)
i have no speed issues as im on adsl2 24mb..I dont owe nothing, I own everything I have... dont do buy now pay later, dont do credit cards, dont do loans...0 -

When I mentioned I switched off my computer and all peripherals at the mains, I use a Domia Lite module and controller (quite hassle free simple pressing a button on a remote kept on my desk). Domia Lite is exactly the same thing as Bye Bye Standby, it is just the older branding before energy saving became fashionable in a big way, so is completely compatible between those two brands by the same company."She is quite the oddball. If you aren't using it, it doesn't need to be on, just like everything else.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Although there are some things I keep on (hi fi etc) because they lose their memory if they lose power."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

My router goes off only when I turn the PC off at the mains.
Speakers etc are in the same socket, so I've only got to bend down at the side of the desk and switch everything off at the same time.
Most nights when I go to bed, OH is still up playing Xbox live so I have to leave it on for him.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
Until six months ago, I would turn mine of every time I logged off, now I leave it on day and night. Having said that, yesterday I returned from holiday and I'd turned it off then. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
