what can I do with Brisket?

Hi All
I picked up some cheap brisket of beef in Sainsburys the other day - one of my 3:30pm Sunday afternoon dashes to get the reduced stuff to put in the freezer.
I'm a vegetarian myself but I plan to cook it for OH and DS. All the lady behind the counter said was cook it slowly - any suggestions please?!
I don't have a slow cooker but I do have a pressure cooker - will that be any good? Other than than I just have a normal gas oven and hob.
Any advice gratefully received!PigginSkint's debt free diary

Brisket is a really tasty cut of beef. I cook mine at 150C (fan temperature) for about 4 hours. You must let it rest after removing from the oven, then slice and enjoy.
Edit: the timing depends on the size of joint - 1-1half Kg 4 hours for me0 -
We had brisket last weekend - put it in a large saucepan on the hob with some onion, carrots, stock, herbs (bung in whatever you fancy, very little seems to spoil it, a small bit of garlic or wine enhances the flavour even more), but leave it to cook for hours - ours went on about 8.00 a.m. and we ate about 4.00 p.m.
You could also put it in the oven in a casserole or I have been known to put it in the slow cooker and leave it on all night (and all the next day if needed) - you'll know when its ready, its so tender when cooked properly and absolutely delicious - really its one of the nicest cuts of beef when cooked properly and absolutely horrible when not cooked properly!0 -
You can slow roast it for a "roast"-type dinner - but it will be well done and fully cooked all the way through.
Alternatively, you can pot-roast it, by adding veg, stock, wine etc for a casserole-type dish.
It must be cooked long and slow as it will be tough otherwise. Very tasty though - I'd say it's the most flavoursome cut of beef.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

My sister told me to do this for roasting brisket and I do it every time - it is easy and delicious.
Put your brisket in a covered meat tin and pour boiling water over it to about 3/4 of tin. Crush an oxo (or similar) cube into the water, put in a high oven (gas 8) for about 20 mins then turn down to 2-3 and leave for about 4 hours + if necessary. You have a lovely roast and loads of very scrummy gravy.
OOOh I haven't had this for ages as OH is a veggie and it's not really viable to do one just for me but now I want some!"It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0 -

Hi All
Thanks so much for all the suggestions - you've given me plenty to choose from. I shall have a good think about which one to use and make it for the boys on Sunday!

Hi
I've found the other threads for cooking brisket in the slow cooker, but i just wanted to check how long it should be cooked for to make it tender...i want it nice and soft, but not so soft that it just goes into mush!!
i've got a piece 1.2kg, and i was gonna chop up an onion, some carrots and potatoes, then sit the brisket on them in the s/c, and add about a pint of oxo stock.i was gonna add some red wine, but not sure how much....a glass-ful?
and any ideas what i can use any left-over meat for apart from casserole( would i just cook a casserole as normal in the s/c again, just bunging the cooked meat in at the beginning?)
Thanx in advance0 -
I always put my slow cooker on low which should cook it in 10-12 hours according to the book, but sometimes I am out at work for 13 hours and it is fine.
Never cooked on high or auto, so don't know the answer regarding them.
For left over cooked meats, I always do the same boring thing. Put it in a saucepan with gravy and heat it up.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010
