If (when) anyone comes under budget what do you do with your extra money? I'm thinking an extra mortgage payment but is it best to keep it in a savings account for a more spendy month or is that destroying the point?
The other alternative is to try and last until the money's gone, then start the new grocery month when it's run out. Keep that the same and hopefully roll it over again until eventually I have a month where I get to payday (22nd) without having spent the money from the previous months paycheque (IYSWIM?).
    Ideas?
Kaz,so far I haven't had much left from budget but the percentage of my pay on groceries is now less so I do have money left at the end of the month!IYSWIM
I have managed to save enough money since Jan(in a saving acc.)to pay for our family hol-to include all offspring and other halves and g/children.Will do big shop to take with us(self-catering for 8A and 2C!!)(bags I not wash up)
Also managed to top up an ISA,never been able to save money, but no horrid debts-thankfully.
Tho' much easier not having any 'dependents' to spend it!Only mortgage and usual utilities.

    Hi,

Have been lurking around for a while now and have managed to cut nearly all my monthly budgets. All I need to cut now is my grocery pot. I currently spend £390 a month for 2 adults, DD and a currently weaning DS. I am ashamed at our budget, but have begun to make improvements. I've recently aquired a breadmaker thanks to freecycle and have cut down to mainly value products. My main problem is that I'm buying for 2 households, (We have a caravan which we use every weekend and all school holidays).

I think it's too late to join this the April Challenge as my "month" begins on the 25th, but thought I'd say "hi". I'll definitely be joining in properly in May.

    Sophie
Thanks to all the lovely people on here I have managed to cut my hours down to 2 days a week, allowing me to spend more time with my gorgeous Children. :j

Welcome Sophie. Buying for 2 households shouldn't cause too much of an issue if you are careful, basically as you're still using the same amount of items just in 2 seperate places. Taking the breadmaker with you might be an issue but you could always make it to take with you, I always freeze hm bread. Do you make all of your DSs foods yourself?

Well I'm just updating spendings, milkman paid, other than that NSD :D have increased Saturday deliveries because I keep having to pop to the shop for milk and never buy just milk :o I have also added some OJ on for 2 weeks as it's on offer.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • hi everyone

Spent £15.06 today, found two lots of sausages marked down, a beef joint half price and half a lamb shoulder marked down too, so too good to miss. Also bought some more fresh fruit so my total so far is £40.75, so only £ 9.25 left out of my £50 for the month, but no problem as I think I have enough left now for the rest of the month, just fresh fruit to buy but only just over two weeks to go now and still have enough fruit for another week so no probs there.

    Cheers

I've done well with making food go a long way this week, quite proud of myself. On Tuesday we had a 'freezer safari' night. OH had pizza, the children had leftover mashed potato, beans and fishfingers, and I had liver and onions with mash & corn that had been stashed away a couple of weeks ago. Last night I got round to using some bacon steaks: we got through six, but the two that are left will do a stir-fried rice tonight, also using up the eggs which are past their best for frying but will be fine scrambled in with the rice. And the other amazing thing: two pineapples I got on special are 3/4 used. Raw pineapple for daughter, pineapple pancakes for breakfast for me one morning, spicy salsa with roast chicken and ordinary chopped pineapple with last night's bacon steaks. If I have time, I may make upside down cake tomorrow to use the last of it. Will do next week's shopping this afternoon (while at work, LOL): see if the food part of it can be closer to £50 than the usual £100, since my freezer contains enough fish, mince, sausages, chicken, duck and other delights to keep us going for quite a while.
    Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600
    Overpayments to date: £3000

I always thought that Wilkinsons was the cheapest for toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair shampoo etc but found the shop savers the other day and they are cheaper still so will be going back there often now, the savings were not huge but they were savings and that is what counts:D
