I was interested in reading the Sunday Mail article, but I don't think the article was very well researched. Many of us on this forum, including myself, did not actually enter their credit details on the Shopper Discounts site - they were forwarded on by the company we had just done business with, presumably for financial reward.
Maybe the trainline connection is more "honest" as if you input your credit card details you should realise that you are making a payment. My experience was via allposters.com and although I only made one payment and that was returned to me I am still very angry about the loose behaviour of allposters with my confidential credit information. Despite a nice product I will never be able to do business with them again - I hope they gained enough commision from Shopper Discounts to make up the loss.
Surely the ease of getting the money back must scream that this is just on the edge of legality. They don't want to cause too much trouble and just prey on people who don't check their cc / bank statements. Weak articles like the one in the Mail on Sunday just make any readers think - "more fool them" and let them off the hook. Surely there is something we can do to close this mob down.
No, you're quite right, Trainline DID forward users bank details onto them, it seems someone is telling porkies ;).

As far as I am aware NOBODY on here added their bank detail's, they were forwarded on, whether or not each company involved is aware of this fact, remains upto now, a mystery.

I checked to find out how I ended up joining, their reply was:-

Our records show that you or someone with access to your credit/debit card completed an online transaction with LiGo Electronics. After your transaction, you were offered the opportunity to join the Shopper Discounts and Rewards programme with a £15 cash back voucher and a 30 day free trial. Immediately next to the offer, the Offer and Billing Details were displayed. By entering your email address twice as an electronic signature and then clicking on the 'yes' button to accept the offer, you authorised us to charge the monthly membership fee to the credit card or debit card account you used for your transaction with LiGo Electronics after your free trial period ended.

I was happy with the product I bought from LiGo, but I am not happy with this "stealth sign-up" and will not be using them again.
  • I am a newbie on this formu and on the whole very happy with other advice, I am a tad disapointed with the all seeing sage that has not suffered at the hands of a very shoddy practice and actually wonder why they are on here. It appears on the whole this site is to advise of good practice, warn of poor practice, advise of good deals, warn of poor deals and generally experiences, not an opinion of, I got it right by being better than the rest then wanted to tell you all I feel superior to the rest. The person who notes that they saw right through this scam is perhaps a fan of Spike Milligan who once wrote A sure cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree. Well thanks for your advice, I suggest you are not in a caring proffession, but maybe work for a n affiliated company, the very same money making scam or even HM Treasury!
To my point, we have also been caught and paid this out for many months, yes we feel embarressed, stupid and everything else. I just wanted to air my opinion of the organised enterprise and wonder if there is anyway that we stand a chance of getting our money back. They obviously use peoples eye for a bargain, some may call it greed but the offer of £10-00 off is always tempting, the smallprint is rarely read-my fault I know and now I am literrally paying for it. I don't want sympathy, I don't want arrogance of the individual feeling superior to all others I want to warn others and recover my money.

I'm amazed at how many people join this thread every day. I think more awareness of this scam has to be made. People should check their bank statements and make their friends and family aware of the shoppersdiscounts&rewards scam.

Their site does list their contact details, which I think should be a stickered at the top of each page of the thread, with an explanation how to get every penny back.

    It only takes two steps:
1-A phone call (2-3minute), confirm your email, name and address (and you'd like all your money back, as you didn't know that you signed up to this scam).
2-Posting of the claim form below. (which they email to you as a result of the phone call):
This notice confirms that your Membership in Shopper Discounts & Rewards has been cancelled as of 05/05/2009.

Your cancel confirmation number is: 2484####.

We have issued a refund of your Membership fee. This refund will appear as a credit to your account within the next 10 working days.

Please let us know if your request was resolved to your satisfaction. All responses submitted will go to our Customer Service Director for review because your feedback is important to us.

If you would like to provide feedback, please

    Sincerely,

The Shopper Discounts & Rewards Team
    0808 234 1539

Note: Your cancellation ref number is in the email they send with the claim form.

Too many people are ringing their bank which is a longer process.

Shopper Discounts & Rewards contact details:

I had my last 3 payments refunded, a claim form emailed to me and my “membership” cancelled by the end of the phone call.
I received an email (a day after the posting of my claim form) to say they’ll refund me the rest of my money.
4 working days after the phone call I received my last 3 payments.
8 working days after the phone call I had received all the money they took for my account.

Do not settle for anything less than all your money back.

Will you please let us know which company passed your details on to SD&R.

I think PROJECT GENESIS has Spike Milligan's words quoted in the park area of the ship.

    Good luck

    Hi everyone,

I have booked a flight through ebookers last month and I have just noticed my bank account has been debited as well by £10 by shopperdiscounts.co.uk, exactly 1 month after my booking was made.

I have alerted the fraud department of my bank to stop any further payment + stop my card and I have just sent an email to the customers services of ebookers.com.

Just beware if you are offered a £10 discount on your next flight/hotel/car rental or any travel related services.

I shall try the number and get my money back. I am glad to have found this site as I could react very rapidly. Thanks for the contribution from those who have been caught up in this scam.
  • I called the number and was told I would be refunded within 10 days.

I asked them to produce the document I had signed to authorise the debit and was given a code to cancel "my subscription"... so the conversation was pretty swift!

Has anyone tried to use this service, and then cancel it afterwards? So you get your £10/ £15 discount, and then cancel the service within 28 days?

As far as I'm aware, for a fee of £15, you get a £10 discount on your next purchase..........................theoretically making you "-" £5, better off.

  • Hi there all,

I have also been stung by this scam after purchasing via expedia.

I telephoned Shopper Discounts and Rewards immediately and was greeted by a well rehearsed conversation by one of their staff.

I was told I would receive a refund of the £10 I have paid already within the next 10 days.

I find it appalling that companies mentioned on this thread are associating themselves with this scam.

I have emailed Watchdog to see if they will publicise this before thousands more are caught out.

Even now, after all this time, and the many thousands of reports accumulating about this scam, Watchdog still have done ZILCH about them, I think Watchdog do exactly as it says on the tin, They Watch Dogs.
