  • Yes, I too have been conned by Shopperdiscuounts, who put some very small print at the bottom of a website, which apparently stated that they would then take regular money off me.

Some people say they are rogues, vagabonds and thieves, but I wouldn't dream of stating that.

I am now trying to get 3 months x £10 back.

You may wish to avoid the Co. " BestDirect", if you want to avoid the Shopperdiscounts ripoff.

I have tried to stop Visa from taking any future debits from the above Cos. - they won't or can't do it. (Unlike your normal bank account). Does this make Visa into rogues, vagabonds and thieves? Just a question

I can't believe it but I too have been caught out by these Shopper Discount people! I have just received my credit card statement and there are two sums of £10-00 taken - one for February and one for March. I am so careful about this sort of thing and I feel completely stupid.
I can only think that this has come from a transaction with Trainline.com where I was promised £15-00 off my next booking...and of course who can resist an offer like this? But how can Trainline.com (or whatever other company allow these people to be linked to them) agree to provide them with one's credit card details?
I have written to Shopper Discount's customer servive department and wait to see what response I get. If they refund the money I will write again and inform Moneysavers...and if they don't I'll also let you know. I won't be using trainline.com again - and will make sure friends don't use them either - or any of the other companies mentioned in these posts

Today I ordered flowers for my Mum from Interflora. My order came to around £35 including delivery, and I used a voucher code to save £5. On completion I got the message referred to above, of saving £15 off my next order. So I clicked the link and signed up to the site. I completed the instructions (emailing my Interflora receipt and membership number to them) and am awaiting my cheque for £15. As I understand it, my first 30 days are a free trial, and I intend to cancel asap afterwards. Assuming the cheque does arrive and I cancel before I am charged my Mum's flowers and chocolates will have cost me £15 - bargain! Thanks for the helpful posts on this thread.

  • My Fiance ordered a TV on the 'Bennetts Electrical' website, and there was a £10 cashback voucher which he clicked on. It said that we'd get £10 off our next purchase.....little did he know it would cost him £8 per month!! He's not one for checking his statements like me, and didn't realise this was happening until 3 months on, they tried to take £200!! Fortunately, Tesco Finance phoned him immediately to confirm whether or not this was him trying to make the transaction, and they were able to put a stop to it. They cancelled his card immediately and sent him a new one. The joke is that he never even gave Shopper Discounts & Rewards' his details....they got them from Bennetts when he bought the TV...and then the TV never even arrived. Needless to say we will NEVER shop at Bennetts again.

....have had a reply to my e mail today to say that they would refund monies paid soon - so will wait and see....BUT....I have found a few e mails in my deleted box which do actually say that they will be taking £10-00 a month. But extremely well hidden at the bottom of a long e mail which to all intents and purposes looks like a junk e mail. Fingers crossed - and just to confirm that this link was definitely through thetrainline.com which I notice was featured by this very site as offering money off train tickets - SO JUST BEWARE NOT TO CLICK FOR FURTHER DISCOUNTS!

Somehow in our rage at this scam we seem to be missing the point that it is legal for companies to pass on our credit /debit card details to a third party. This scam could not work if this were illegal. Is there anyone we can complain to about this abuse of sensitive financial information which I feel must be at the very edge of legality - a loophole that should be removed. If you want to sign up for the Shopper Discount and Rewards that's fine - but only if you type in your credit card/debit card details on that site and thereby authorise the taking of a monthly payment. Surely just typing in your email address twice should not have the power to start up any financial transaction.
  • While looking at my online bank statement today, i noticed a charge of £10 for shopper discounts. A month ago I bought an online game from Sugar Games and was offered £15 back, which i clicked on. I was to email proof or purchase to this company and they would send me £15 in cheque form, which sounds like a good deal, right? So i sent them the email that Sugar Games sent me as an acknowledgement. There was absolutely no mention of subscription. I would not knowingly sign up to something for £10 a month for nothing!

I got on the phone to Shopper Discounts and whilst waiting on them to answer I stumbled across a few sites where people have had the same problems, so confirmed to me that they were liable. I got a woman who kept saying I signed up by entering my email address twice. I told her that this scam is illegal as they have just entered my bank account and lifted money, also any financial transaction / registration needs to be made clear to the consumer, which this was not - after a bit of shouting (by myself) and threatening them with lawyers (I know its only £10, but its the principle! Theft!) They agreed to cancel my membership and refund my money within 10 days. Are there people writing to Watchdog with regards to this? I am thinking of writing them an email about this.
  • Dear Sir / Madam,

I bought a game from your website 4 weeks ago and was offered £15 cash back voucher, which i clicked on. However, I was shocked to see that today £10 was taken from my bank account as a membership fee to shopper rewards and discounts. At no time was there a referral to any monthly payments made whilst i took up this offer and see this as being very deceitful from the company. There are many discount/voucher webpages, offering the same services for free and would never choose to pay £10 for a membership.

However, I am more puzzled to the fact that they had my bank account details, which i did not give them. Can you please enlighten me of how they would have come to have sensitive financial information on one of "your" customers.

I am sure that I wont be the first to have complained about this to you, as there are hundreds, if not thousands of people in the same situation. Please check moneysavingexpert.com.

I called shopper rewards and discounts, and they offered me my money back and cancelled my "membership" which means they accept liability. I like your website and planned to buy from your site again, however, after this experience, I will not be buying from your website again, as im not sure if my financial transactions are safe.

I look forward to hearing your response.

    Another scammer - thetrainline.com

I just phoned shopperdiscounts.com and they have refunded all but one of my so called "payments" (theft, in my book.) you do have to hold on and listen to a repeat of your email address etc but you do eventually get through to a person who is probably on a commission to deter you from getting refunds.

There must be something that can be done because i certainly would not have put my credit card details to sign up for a site that costs me £10 a month. thetrainline.com must have given my details out.

I am going to write to Tony Levene at the Guardian. He often exposes these types of things. Is anyone else doing the same?
