  • i would swap onto senior food as it does have reduced calories but hopefully should still fill you dog up. if you still have concerns when you do go and see you vet (for vaccines i hope) ask them to weigh him and see what he should normally be and take advice from them
  • hi I would say find a COMPLETE puppy large breed and stick to it, you decide what your dog eats not him!
pro plan, james wellbeloved are both fab foods
just make sure it is large breed as it encourages slower growth than the normal puppy foods and has different calcium levels etc, plus most large breed ones will have chondroitin and glucosamine in to help joint health.
  • We switched Jess (age 6) onto senior food a few months back due to her immobility atm and the fact she to was becomming a tad more curvacous around her rear end (not unlike me lol), i think it has helped as she stopped gaining weight while she was feeling well and eating like mad (she was also on prednisalone which made her very hungry)

    I've been Money Tipped!
When my dog was a puppy I tried loads of different foods and most of them either upset his stomach or made him scratch. Bakers made him scratch like crazy and made him hyper!!! My vet said Bakers is the worst food to give because of all the colouring and additives and that it makes a lot of dogs hyper.

My dog has been on James Wellbeloved for about 6 years now and it really suits him. He is a large dog but a 15kg sack of food lasts at least 6 weeks so although it is not cheap to buy (and seems to be going up and up) it doesn't actually work out that much a week to feed him.

I know what her weight should be, and I'm fairly sure it's more than that! I might call into the surgery and see if they'll quickly pop her on the scales to see how much over she is.
I think I didn't want to use senior food because that will make her officially old, and I'm trying to ignore the fact that she's getting on a bit - my previous EBT made it to 13, but I don't know what the average for the breed is. (I probably won't be able to rehome another dog when this one goes, due to the hours I work, so Ellie has to last forever!)
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

A lot of the so-called senior foods are branded "senior / light" so really you can tell her that she's having it as it's light / low fat - forget about the "senior" bit :)

    Woops =))

Its so easy for the little darlings to gain the weight. My cocker I have to watch like a hawk. Hes on Arden grange which is known to pile it on and on top of that I have my parents who give him an afternoon biscuit and all the scrapings off their plates. And then hubby has the habit of being heavy handed when feeding him.

You can pop into the vets anytime outside of surgery hours to get her weighed and it wont cost.

I know you are tired after a hard shift at work but can you not increase the time you walk her on days off? It would be much more beneficial to her health - the extra gentle exercise and a bit of weight loss will help her arthritis

hi, I don't know if this helps but I get my puppy JWB from vetuk.co.uk and it comes in at £32.67 for 15kg and and £32.99 for adult dog, if you have a "UK food containing order" for over £30.00 it is free delivery by 48hr courier (signature requried)
This is the cheapest i have found and with free delivery it can't be bad!

Have just had a good look... and you have to order over £30 worth of actual food to qualify... so if you're buying £29.99 worth you will have to pay for shipping - it's worth adding a small value food product to save the £3.99 :)

I usually buy Harley's ZD ULtra from the vet, partly because of loyalty as they've been so good with us, but at £55 for a 10kg bag, it's pricey.

I've just checked the link given by glitterycloud and the same bag is £43 including delivery.

So as much as I believe in supporting our vet, I can't afford to do it to the tune of £12 every month.

Thanks glitterycloud, you've just saved me some money. :T

Try Burns - it's organic & much cheaper. I bought some JWB on special offer & the now am having to hand feed the burns to get them to eat it. It's v good & they will only get JWB when it is on offer (due to price not quality).
