As far as I can remember, Autarky is as cheap as it is because it's aimed at working dogs rather than pet dogs, and so is exempt from tax. I'm not sure if this is still the case - the protein level used to be a little higher than most other pet foods, but nothing to worry about if your dog gets plenty of exercise
My old Lab is so doddery now, exercise is basically out of the question! She would love to go "walkies", but will keel over after 100 yards. I have her on the Autumn Autarky for older dogs and only feed minimum amounts to keep her weight in check."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -

Sorry - wasn't directing the exercise comment at you!
Please ignore my last point anyway. Having just checked the nutritional analysis, the adult food is 22% protein and the mature lite has 17% protein - both of these are pretty standard as far as dog foods go. I'm almost certain that it was higher than this a couple of years ago, and apologise for the confusion - the fact that they were subsidised due to being aimed at working dogs, and thus have a higher protein content, seems to be outdated.0 -
We buy Gold Star from a large cheap pet food shop. It is a 15kg bag and it is only £8.50. It is for working and sporting dogs, so you do not pay VAT on it.cross stitch cafe #90 UFO's 6 to finish in 2013, and loads of new kits to boot

Try Autarky. It's not the best food out there, but it's excellent for the price (I've seen it online somewhere at £15-ish for a 15kg bag) and certainly better than Eukanuba and Royal Canin.
Autarky used to be aimed at working dogs, so was exempt from VAT (hence the price), but I'm not altogether sure that it still is.0 -

Would you say Arden grange or Autarky would be better(less artificial)? I can afford both of these I had a look at Gold Star thanks, but I would prefer one of the other two.0 -
As a fairly recent convert to Autarky I was originally worried about the working dog part of it as I have 3 dogs aged from 4 to 17 to feed. Many years ago I was feeding the JRTs on cheap working dog food and they were like lunatics on it so I didn't want to go back to hyper behaviour but when I checked the ingredient list the protein was lower by 4% than RC and the other ingredients were broadly similar.
I changed over from Royal Canin when the price jumped to £40+ and the quality appeared to deteriate (sp) at about the same time.....the dogs weren't as keen on it and the rott who has always been a bit delicate in the stomach area was getting even windier....the terriers seem to have stomachs like iron and i've never had to worry about stomach upsets with them.:D
On the Autarky the big dog is better than he has ever been regarding his stomach and all have lovely coats and breath:D and it's costing me less than half the price then the RC did. Now that's what I call a result:j0 -
