thanks guys. Need to definitely try to source cheaper fruit and veg - it's getting ridiculous. I'm certainly going to give them a go. There is a sainsburys I can go to afterwards if I really get stuck.0

Tinned tomatoes are great from Lidl- much richer than value ones. Also the filled pasta is delicious and only 65p a packet, and the jam is really fruit and a good price.
Hope that helps.

Burgers, not sure about "farm assured" but they have some frozen on offer at the moment 1.48 for 100% beef [actually it is 99% according to ingredients list]
Lidl is a bit light on ethical free range / organic / fairtrade but it does do someEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I like Lidl for fruit and veg, they always have an extensive range at my local store and sell some organic as well.
There meat is not Free Range, but does not have water added like most of the supermarkets, and they have some sausages at 85% meat. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0 -
A couple of people have said they did not like the butter but I really like it because it's pale and a bit soft and to me it tastes like Lurpak.
Olive oil is excellent value.
I also buy dishwasher powder there as much cheaper than anywhere else. I tried their washing powder and although it got the clothes really clean they were stiff as a board. Then I read on another thread that you only needed to use half as much as usual. This worked and of course it makes it work out even cheaperIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Must admit I prefer Aldi, but being lucky enough to have a lidl and an aldi in the town centre I usually do both. Lidl is better for flour especially the bread flour and my Lidl strawberry plants (6 for 1.49) are growing like mad in the back garden. Both lidl and aldi nappies are fab and cheaper than own brand versions at any of the supermarkets. Aldi's beans are yum and the kids love the beans and sausages. I make an occasional trip to morrisons as well for certain items I either can't get at the other 2 maybe 2 times a month. We also have a tesco and I occasionally go there but only when I have vouchers or a really good offer is on. Thing is I was only working part time and now am on maternity leave so have the time to shop around. I get fruit/veg/farm butter/cheese/FR eggs from a local farm shop, and my meats/chickens from either anouther local farm shop or local butcher. We can get an organic freerange chicken at our butchers which comes from a farm around 15 mins away from him. sometimes was even running around the day before for around £6-£7. They are huge and really tasty does 3 meals for 5 of us easily.

Among the items I like are Lidls olive oil, passta, danepack butter, mature cheese, cooked roast beef, biscuits, apple juice, wine, dark chocolate and eggs. I don't like their yoghurts or coleslaw. Fruit and vegetables are a hit or a miss. I try stuff and if I don't like it, I don't buy it again. The prices are rising but Lidls are still good value. I like Aldi too but don't have one near me." I tend to do a lot of shopping at Lidl - good tomato ketchup, potato salad (although far too much for two unfortunately), butter, cheese, milk, all fruit juices, cooked meats, herbs and spices, tinned toms, tinned beans (not baked beans as I agree those are now rubbish) jars of roasted peppers, fab chocolate, nice cereals.
A bit disappointed with the last lot of onions I got there, they were a bit elderly. Their instant coffee was rubbish. On the whole I find their stuff far better quality and less likely to be binned/wasted than the stuff bought at Morrison's for double the price."All cruelty springs from weakness" - Lucius Annaeus SenecaPersonal pronouns are they/them/their, please.
I'm intolerant of wheat, citrus, grapes, grape products and dried vine fruits, tomato, and beetroot, and I am also somewhat caffeine sensitive.0 -
Seems like the wider public really is waking up and realising it's time to be more OS http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/food/2008/05/the_price_is_completely_right.html
