  • Good afternoon everyone:hello:
Hugs to all those who need them - Smoky - thinking of you and your children.
It really is a foul day here today, cold, windy, rain lashing down - lovely. I had the bright idea to paint the hall this morning. Hubby has had to go to work, and so I'm up to my eyeballs in paint now. It's had one coat and is now drying so I thought I'd take the opportunity to grab some lunch (at 2.00pm) and my first drink since breakfast.
One of the children has gone to a friend's house, and the other is upstairs on his laptop, so I guess the afternoon's painting is down to me. Oh well, me and my bright ideas;)

Squiggly don't get upset, as nobody was criticising you or ALL social workers, as we can't say all are the same. There's good and bad in every profession however, and you wouldn't believe the amount of stick I get for being a teacher, and do I care?:whistle:;)

Am now back to being rational.... :o I did start teaching, then changed my mind, lol - my hat goes off to you; it's incredibly hard work. What shocked me once was an 8 year old standing there saying "I know my rights, you can't touch me".. to another member of staff!!! But dealing with that & all the paperwork/targets etc, takes over your life - yet people think you just do 9-3 & get all those holidays off, lol!!! I think not.....

I have been hunting for my Community Care & the Law book - to see if I can suggest anything for PenPin to pester for.

Asked DDs what they fancied for tea and the overwhelming vote was for my home made lasagne.

Looks as if it is out to the shops for ingredients.

Why is there always either too much or too little in the way of lasagne sheets in the cupboard as the minute I buy new ones I will find an old box lurking just out of sight and reach!!!

I don't think anyone meant to slate social workers as such just that the ones who are disorganised or thoughtless have such an adverse affect on vulnerable people.

Big (gentle ) hug to penny pincher!

I do High school supply now, but was once working in a Primary school and got told to "Do one..." by a 7 year old when I was helping him with his maths:eek:  If it really was 9-3 with all the holidays I don't think we'd see quite as many people leaving full time teaching(like I have) in droves;) ;) What field of social work are you going into?:confused:

Woohooo, I've made bread rolls today. I have made lots of bread in my BM, but I've been too scared to do rolls by letting it make the dough and then taking it out.

Due to the bread rolls in Asda this week resembling cannon balls rather than anything edible, I felt I had to take the plunge. I made one tiny one as well as the normal sized ones, especially to test, and they're lovely.

I am really, stupidly pleased about this, and had to share. Sorry :rotfl:
  • Hiya Candygirl,

I'm currently on a full-time (unpaid) 6 month work placement with the fostering team, and really do enjoy it :) Next academic year I do an 8 month placement, and have no idea until about 2 weeks before where I'll end up! I'm hoping to do something in adult/older people community care, or mental health, or maybe something in domestic violence. But I'd love to go back to join fostering, all the SW's I am working with are so friendly & supportive (which is not what I expected... !)

It's interesting watching the TV ads trying to recruit people into teaching - I know working with kids can be really entertaining/interesting, but I think perhaps making them aware of the realities could be an idea as well... or not!!!

Morning all - been out of the loop for a few weeks with 'the job that ate my life.' The insanity will continue next Tuesday so I'm going to make the most of the long weekend.

We must work in the same place! Hope you have a nice weekend though and can relax a bit.

Simnel cake is quite nice, although I'm now fed up explaining to people what it is, so I sent everyone the link to the wikipedia article. Might make it again, but if anyone knows a recipe for an egg-free version I'd be really grateful as one of OH's collegues can't eat eggs (normally when I send cake to work with him I make some egg free cookies or something for her too)

I got fed up teaching too and I wouldn't like to go back. The sixth formers were fine if a little rough round the edges and hard work sometimes but some of the primary kids behaviour was shocking beyond belief, the language you wouldn't believe - I shudder to think what my parents would have done if I'd have behaved like that. Sad really.

    Hiya!

Smokybabe I can't imagine what you are going through at the moment, but I will continue to pray for you and your family (if you don't mind).

SquigglyDiggly Glad you haven't taken it to heart as there are loads of good sw out there and it only takes a couple of bad ones to give the others a bad name. I often experience that as I'm a primary school teacher and know for a fact that there are teachers out there that I wouldn't want teaching my own daughters.

Candygirl I teach in a 'challenging' area but most of the problems are from parents and not the pupils, as we have high expectations for them and good discipline. One parent was asked to attend a meeting with the special needs teacher and the speech therapist, but wasn't very happy that her precious time was being taken up by a meeting for her child. She turned around to the speech therapist and said '....anyway what are you going to do about his flat feet?'
Another parent dropped her daughter off late (a common problem we have) and walked across the classroom announcing 'I've gotta go as I've got a dead cat in the garden' in front of the whole class who were sitting on the carpet waiting for me to read them a story!
I could write a book on the funny things that children have said and the funny/scary things that their parents have said and done! :rotfl:
Hardup Hester works in a school and her daily accounts of the goings on there either make me  or:rotfl: .

I've been a busy little bee today. This morning DD1 and I went to church to a very moving Good Friday service. Since then I've been busy in the kitchen and made...

Eggy Bread (or French Toast if you're posh ):rotfl:
    Vegetable Hotpot
    Iced Buns
    Garlic Bread
    Sausage rolls (for MIL tomorrow)
Loaf of bread (for MIL tomorrow)

A big hurray:j as the repair man fixed my bl***y washing machine (for the time being) so the kitchen floor is covered in the past week's dirty washing lined up to be done. He has replaced the carbon brushes and it is making a different spinning sound, DD2 said it sounds like a trapped bee in the kitchen.:rotfl:
I've decided to buy a new wm in a month or so and I've posted a new thread on the OS site as I need all of your experienced opinions on the best wm to buy. The repair man recommended a Bosch, but I'd like your opinions too. ;)

Hope you all enjoy the rest of your day!

pennypincher--- As you know I am a sw, I work on an adult learning disabilty team. I have only been qualified a year and I only know the basics.

If you wanted to have the same carer to come in all the time, you could claim a direct payment from ss for this, then you choose who you want. You can't choose oh or relatives unforntuatley!

    here the link http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/FinancialSupport/DG_10016128

I think your sw is c**p, I would not dare not go to a call, which is what she did! If she was lost, she should of phoned you and asked for directions. I reguarly get lost and if I think I am going to be late i just phone them. If I don't know where the call is, I deliberaty set off early, so if I get lost its ok.

She should not of made you feel like that, its not on:mad:

I have met some dreadful sw's and some fab ones, sounds like you got the rubbish one

If you are interested in asking for dp, ask for another sw to come round and talk it over. hope you get something sorted xxxx
