It depends on the shop bought loaf, if you buy smartprice/value white sliced then HM will be dearer

However if you buy quality loaves then HM will be cheaper, plus it will not have any additives or too much salt or mystery iterms in it as you have complete control

Just loooking at this online and they state that you have access to a panasonic helpline, but the breadmaker looks the same as the morphy richards one. Are morphy richards and panasonic the same co.?

There is a mistake on the website - the sepecifications are from the panasonic BM and not the tesco BM

Hi guys. Wonder if you BM experts can help me. I bought my Tesco BM a few days ago and for my first attempt I used a ready-mix wholemeal bread. It came out quite good, taste was nice although I'd say it was a little sunk on the top.

For my 2nd attempt I thought I would make wholemeal from scratch and used the ingredients as per my manual - set the machine to dough setting then finished off in the oven. Left to rise for 20 minutes then 1/2 hour at 200 degrees in the oven. The loaf came out a lovely shape and colour, however when cut, it felt quite "heavy". Very disappointed considering it looked the perfect loaf.

The 3rd attempt - used ingredients from scratch again but programmed BM to make the loaf. Again, the top has sunk :(

On both attempts of using ingredients from scratch, I used a mixture of wholemeal and strong white flour, Tesco fast-acting yeast, salt and oil - all as the manual suggests and to the measurements it's recommending. No sugar added as the back of the yeast packet said I wouldn't need to.

I've done a search and it appears that sunken tops can be caused by too much water? Is there anything else I'm doing wrong as I'm feeling a bit disheartened now.

    My two questions are:
    1. How can I stop the sunken tops when it comes from the BM?
    2. If I just use the dough setting and finish off in the oven, is there something else I should be doing?

    thank you.

PS. Many of you have Panasonics - does the machine make the difference?

do try with a bit less water. All flours are different and some have more moisture in than others to start with so the recipe book cant be precise only a guide.

I use the Tesco yeast. Having never read the back of the packet, I follow my BM instructions which say add a spoonful of sugar. It seems to work fine.

HIYA Jenny. My loaves always seemed to be rather heavy but I recently bought the bread improver from this place and it makes a big big difference..
it cost as little as £5.49 with delivery but well worth it.

well as we speak there is 30 mins left to run on yet another bread making session :o

I had a ready-mix granary packet and I followed the instructions on the back and not my manual, plus I didn't add quite so much water. However I still want to be able to use ingredients from scratch so still don't know where I could be going wrong  unless I just use some generic recipies and try those instead of relying on the manual quantities?

Cranky40 - With the tesco yeast, I will add sugar next time to see if that helps.

Littleredhen - I have used a mixture of strong white and wholemeal (measurements from the manual) so I dont think that was it. perhaps I need less water?

Is a BM a BM or do you get what you pay for? Beginning to wonder if I should've paid more and got a panasonic as everyone raves about them

All of the above are valid in my experience - in addition you could try to add a little Vitamin C powder when you are making wholemeal bread.
