    Martyn,

I think its a good idea too, well done, are you really going to have a go at knitting ? only asking because i am hopeless at it, and was going to offer more practicle help, driving picking up squares etc, but would like to see the efforts of another non knitter, :D:D

Not only am I going to "have a go", I fully intend to buy whatever I need tomorrow when I do the wekly "Billy-loads-mates" shopping trip. Now what do I need, a ball of string type stuff and a couple of pointy stick things. Hmmm....

Martyn - if you read some of the earlier posts on this thread there are some links to 'learning to knit' sites! My FIL knits the most beautiful Fair Isle patterns and also does tapestries. If you look at some of the American knitting sites a lot of men there knit. Please feel free to learn; besides learning something useful for years to come, you'll find it very therapeutic and soothing. I do hope you have a go!

    Consider it done!

I have very fond memories as a youngster watching my dear Mum knitting and darning socks. The only problem I can forsee is what it might do to my street-cred. Although I still feel very sad today, I have to smile at the picture in my mind of a (not so) rough-as-sandpaper ex heavy engineering, heavy haulage driving Sheffield lad, sat in a motorhome with Jimi Hendrix blaring out of the eight track (?) two dogs curled up at his feet, a mug of cocoa at his side and knitting needles clicking furiously.

While I'm at it, I also intend to learn to play the acoustic giutar as well!

It paints a very macho-but-caring picture, I think, and you've given us some insight as to what sort of chap you are! I hope you stop feeling so sad soon.

As for the 'knitting kit' the pointy things you are need are size 8 needles. You will have no idea of your tension at the moment, tension being how tightly or loosely you knit to give you the right stitches per inch (or cm if you're a modern man) and the stringy stuff is double knitting wool. I'm sure if you flutter your eyelashes at the girlies in the wool shop they'll coo over you like mother hens and give you all the help you want! They'll be very impressed that you want to learn to knit.

We're all longing to know how you get on so keep us postedand there's plenty of us on here who can help if you get stuck!

Champys maybe we have a mini-meet as we drive thorough France on our way to Spain to collect yours, in fact I will be arriving in Calais on the way to Belgium (Ypres) and Holland in early April??

Wouldn't that be fun! However we are in an awkward location in France and nobody would pass through here unless you were on your way to Luxembourg.... (that is probably why it is so quiet here). But we always love visitors.

Great idea - I will def. be joining in.

We cleared out the spare room at the weekend and found a bag full of squares I started knitting with the same idea of sewing them together (not a good enough knitter to follow a pattern!) when my sister was pregnant as my nephew has no grandparents to do this job. He's now 3 years old so the poor little thing might get it by the time he leaves home - lol!
