Well, it’s the end of our very first year! Considering that we have been going since March, it’s amazing just how much we have achieved and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you lovely people have done. The hundreds of items we have knitted and crocheted have bought care and comfort to many vulnerable little people, and I can’t think of a worthier way to spend our spare time. Right from the beginning of what was a vague little idea, I have been amazed at how many people have willingly spent their time (and money, when you think of the materials used and the postage costs) on helping those less fortunate than ourselves. It really strengthens my opinion that most people are NICE!
As we know only too well, the need will always be there, be it for little hats for premature babies to keep them warm in their first few days of life, buntings with which to wrap those little angels who were not lucky enough to have a life, the lovely Teddies for Tragedies – most of which are given to children who have no toys of their own - and many many other essential things; every single one has helped someone in need.
Thanks also to Lou and everyone at Loving Hands (we wish Lou a continued recovery from her dreadful accident this year), to Shelley (Shezmit) of Preemies UK, to Naomi of Operation Elderly Charity Stitches for taking all our 8” squares AND for creating our Yahoo group, the Wooligans, to Lainey Stardust for sewing together hundreds of squares to make blankets for Smokybabe and the Smokelets, to Maytaurus who has found us so many websites and tutorials and to everyone else who has contributed.
I am proud to say that our little hats for Sainsbury’s Innocent Smoothie Big Knit campaign have raised £224 this year for Age Concern, which is a fantastic total – you should all be proud of your selves.
These are the end of year totals (but I will have to add my Mum’s latest items, when she has counted them up!):
Hats for premature babies 560
Scarves 34
Pairs of mittens 5
Bodywarmers 10
Cardigans 11

Tomorrow I will start a new thread for Knit Your Square to Give Your Share 2009; the first post will carry all the relevant information, addresses and so on, our final totals and an invitation to newbies! From then on, I will add peoples’ names along with their new running totals and update regularly. I know that most of us are really busy, especially those with children still on their school holidays! As I have said before, I hope no-one feels under any pressure to contribute; I would much rather people knitted things when it fits in with their own lives. Just one little hat makes a difference to a premature baby so, if you only have time for one hat in the whole year, it will be more than welcome.
Once again, many many thanks to all of you who have made our first year such a success and helped so many deserving causes.
I wish you all a very happy New Year. Look out for the new thread tomorrow!
