I am going to TRY to make one, it's a good 20+ years since I last tried to knit.

Has someone not got a business address (which would be freely available online via yell.co.uk) or similar they could all be sent to??
One day I might be more organised...........

I came across this site. It appeals to knitters to start preparing for next winter when there will be a distribution of blankets to the elderly in nursing homes or who are living alone. It seems that there are Area Coordinators, too - which might help.

I don't know the organisation at all, I'm afraid, I've just read the relevant pages on knitting blankets and blankets squares.

Oooh, PP's square looks just like what all my crochet projects end up being, so no reason why I can't manage a square or two. One question (apologies this is basic) what's dk yarn and will it be easy to spot/ask for in the shop?

Oh, and help the Aged sounds good to me, but if there are lot of blankets, what about Shelter too?

    Hi Claire

DK stands for Double Knitting wool. Every DK ball of wool will have it written on it. Once you start looking at the wool in the shops, you won't even need to ask!

    Cheers

Hi:hello: My square is done, ready and waiting. I think Help the Aged is a great idea. I do hope you can find a central collecting point for these squares and will be watching this thread for further info. I'm not mobile so could probably not manage a mini-meet.

All the best with this very wonderful idea.

can a kititng pro help me please?

I have sourced some correctly toned wool, but need to get some needles. Would 4mm needles be right for DK wool - or do you have a better suggestion?

bella - can't believe your square is already completed! I'm very impressed.

If you knit loosely you may want to try 3.75mm needles but if you knit 'normally' (ie your garments don't come out way too big and last for 25 years and grow with the person) then 4mm are fine!!

I've just located this here thread so will be in with my square later.. though .. I may get all excited and knit a whole blanket by myself!!

I like knitting but get bored very easily so this would be ideal for me. I will ask my mum as well to see if she would do some.

Help the Aged is a good idea. Not sure about the mini-meet however. Where in the country would it be? I work weekends and this presumably is when it would be. If it is not possible for everyone to make the meet is there an address we could send the squares to?

I really wish I could crochet. I have tried to teach myself but just cannot get the hang of it. I get quite annoyed as I can knit and I do not think I am particularly stupid!!!

what a wonderful idea. i have some spare wool not being used for anything... will start on the square later. depending on when and where the mini-meet is... I would love to come and help sew up the 'many' blankets I feel you may end up with.
