Martyn - please stop trembling right now. That is a fantastic idea. In happier times SMOKYBABE has often started the thread with the most wonderful pictures and illustrations that she took the time to find and post, and it always brightened up the thread - a blanket made with real love from us all would be so special.

What does everyone else think and do you want it to be the first one we do?

i think it is a wonderful idea but could i suggest we do a different one for her ..a nice personal one made specifically with her and her family in mind ...what a wonderful idea though thankyou for suggesting it

Yes, ELANTAN, I agree and would love to know what everyone else thinks. I think it would be great if we all made individual choices of colour and so on because then, the blanket would contain a square that is personal to each knitter/crocheter and would mean SMOKY would, hopefully, feel a real connection with us. A true labour of love, really.

Kathy, thank you. The trembling has gone and now I'm crying again, tears of relief, sadness, and a host of other emotions. I'm very glad you approve of the idea and if I can help, I'm happy to learn to knit and make a square myself. I am serious about this and I'd like to help if I can.

  • I think this is a wonderful idea. I've just dug out my knitting needles again after many, many (too many!) years of not knitting, and have started to make squares for a blanket for our home. I think it would be a fantastic expression of love, support and friendship for Smoky and her family to have a blanket knitted or crocheted by fellow OSers. What a lovely idea Martyn.

Kathyy - I agree completely. We should all pick a colour we love and it will have a beautiful patchwork effect to it.

    Hi

On the MS front, Aldi and Lidl have had wool on special recently, tbh whether DK or Aran or whatever as long as it is 8" square, I have also seen wool in Wilkinsons and £1 shops, though not taken notice of what thickness type it is, car boots and markets will also have wool stalls.

I will get going, and I was thinking on whether we could include a square for Smokybabe, but a blanket is brilliant - well spoke up Martyn, and I am sure it will be done in days, would be even better but somehow we must incorporate our MS names on them. For the experts it could be designed in with colour, for anyone else it could just be sewn on in chain stitch.

There are some crochet videos on utube, probably some for chain stitch too.

For those worrying about getting to the mini-meets - the fact they are mini is they will be quite local, with someone who is able to get to another one passing them on. Champys maybe we have a mini-meet as we drive thorough France on our way to Spain to collect yours, in fact I will be arriving in Calais on the way to Belgium (Ypres) and Holland in early April?? and I think it is Chalky? who also does similar. I know Nelski was trying to set the next one in Spain itself.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Sorry I know I will back away now, Mrs Organiser and Fix-It strikes again.

    Martyn,

I think its a good idea too, well done, are you really going to have a go at knitting ? only asking because i am hopeless at it, and was going to offer more practical help, driving picking up squares etc, but would like to see the efforts of another non knitter, :D:D

Martyn - if you read some of the earlier posts on this thread there are some links to 'learning to knit' sites! My FIL knits the most beautiful Fair Isle patterns and also does tapestries. If you look at some of the American knitting sites a lot of men there knit. Please feel free to learn; besides learning something useful for years to come, you'll find it very therapeutic and soothing. I do hope you have a go!

DONNY-GAL - organise away - this is a collective effort and the more ideas the better. I love the way this has already grown and grown; whatever is created will be part of a massive team effort and it'll be great for all of us to be a part of it.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Martin what a wonderful idea! We could use all our favourite colours including healing ones such as the purples, violets, blues, soft greens etc and personalise them with maybe some embroidery, I am already working out how to embroider 9 cats on mine!;) What a lovely way to send Smokey our love!
