Just finished a rose pink one for smokey, so will alter the total in my signature.

    r. mac - the building block one is just 45 stitches cast on and then 5 stitches purl, 5 stitches plain garter until the end of the row for about 6 rows and then swapover, you can see the pattern grow really quickly and it is easy to follow and find where you are IYSWIM

The cat pattern came from the dishcloth pattern site -can't do links very well - but it needs more stitches added.

    Wow! it worked! :D

Morning all - don't forget that later this morning I will be posting something special! Meanwhile, have just caught up with the rest of yesterday's thread - I wasn't able to get back on here last night.

CATZ - I've used double-pointed needles a lot for cables (although, when I was babysitting once and forgot to take one, I used a pick-up-stick from my DGD's toybox!). The needles are usually abbreviated to 'dpns' in knitting patterns. Cabling looks so complicated but is easy to do and I still get amazed when I see the results!

AUSSIE - thanks for your update!

TWINK - thanks for your update and we can't wait to see your hobnob square!

R.MAC - I was going to ask for the cat square pattern so I'm glad you did! Have just printed it off so thanks CATZ for that!

PIPPA - thanks for your update and for the lovely words in your post. It's great to be a part of this - it has so many 'feel-good' factors. For a start, with Smoky's blanket and those for the children, we are each of us making something that, once completed, will make something special, unique, with real people in mind; a true labour of love. I love the fact that none of us has ever met yet we are making individual things that will be joined together; we are mostly recycling wool, using leftovers (I love the fact that some of the wool in the blankets has come from leftovers from things I have made for my children and grandchildren), and also buying it from charity shops so helping good causes; we have formed a lovely community on this thread of kind people who are so generous with their time, with a real interest in knitting and crochet; so many on here have resurrected their skills or have perservered and learnt new ones - which they will never forget and will go on to use in other ways; we have the lovely LAINEY STARDUST - who is putting all Smoky's squares together with great enthusiasm, we have found OECS and the lovely ARTYSTITCHES aka Naomi (more about her in my post later on!), we are making blankets for OECS's wonderful group; we have people posting links to knitting tutorials and helping and advising others, and I am getting so much pleasure from all this - I enjoy reading all the posts, I love seeing the thread grow page by page and I keep thinking of all the real comfort that these blankets will bring to people who really deserve it. It is exciting and heartwarming all at the same time! Oh, and this must be a first for MSE! How great is that?

Anyway, will call back later so watch this space! Have a great Sunday! I'm going to knit a cat today!

Can I please ask whether anyone is accepting crocheted squares or are you all knitting them?

So far I've done 3 squares, one knitted and two crocheted (I find crocheting much quicker to do and doesn't hurt my wrists as much) but it's just occured to me that you all seem to be knitting so not sure whether my crochet ones will be any good :o

I'll go grab my camera and put a photo on so you can have a look and tell me if they're ok!

Ok, here are the squares ...

The bottom left is supposed to be lilac and purple but it looks blue/black on the screen lol

Will those be ok or would it be better to crochet in rows to give a more solid block ifykwim :o

I did have a go at doing that by trying to make a dishcloth but not sure what went wrong as I ended up with half as many chains as I'd started with! more practice needed me thinks :rotfl:

I'm crocheting too Chameleon as my one and only pr of knitting needles are busy with a dishcloth on them. :D I think it doesn't really matter just as long as the square is 8". HTH.

Hi aussie - just about to update!

CHAMELEON - yes, we want crocheted as well as knitted. Your squares are lovely; perfect for the blankets. Your dishcloth made me chuckle, I'm sorry, but you can still use it as a dishcloth so it's not wasted!
