People keep mentioning dishcloth patterns. you wouldn't really do your dishes with these would you? They're so pretty!

Claire I agree they are so pretty, not for cleaning dishes with, ideal for our squares though :D

Well I thought i would be all good tonight. I haven't done any knitting for over 15yrs!!! so I made a start and cast on 50 stitches, happily knitting away and got 1/3 of a square done!!! Great!! I thought... but i have just measured it and it is 10inches not 8 :(
But I refuse to pull it all out again as i was so proud at how much I have done and it took me a while and my fingers hurt and are stiff!!!
Please don't make me go to the naughty corner for not measuring it when i cast on :(

    What colours for smoky's? same size? 8 x 8?

TATTYCATH - Never mind! Most of us have found that 40 stitches on size 8 (4mm) needles with DK yarn works out at 8" across - 5 stitches an inch! When you first cast on 40 stitches it doesn't look wide enough but once you've started knitting, it does, so even if you had measured it, you would not have been able to tell how wide it was. You won't get put into the 'naughty corner'! We're doing 8 x 8s for Smoky's blanket too. If anyone wants to carry on with the squares for charity once we have the 63 squares for our Help the Aged blanket, we need to make 7 x 7" squares because they are standard for OECS (Operation Elderly Charity Stitchers (the organisation which does the sewing up).

CHOCOLATE ORANGE - plain knitting is fine, thanks. ALL squares will be warmly welcomed.

Thanks TWINK and CATZNINE - everyone is doing really well!

moiliere as you are keeping a running total in your sig do you want us to pm you as squares are complete or are you trawling through this thread counting?

i finished a smokey square last night, and have started my 3rd one (ive already mentions finishing my 1st square in this thread so think you may have already counted that one)
have you had time to work out how many we are each doing for smokeys blanket?

Managed two more squares last night for the OECS blanket but was too tired to log on!
Probably won't get time to do any knitting until tonight and as I pulled some lovely blue and green wools out of the loft last night I think I'll swap to do some Smoky squares!
    This is becoming slightly addictive!

MRS MONEYPENNY - it would be great if you could all pm me with your 'squares so far' - it makes my eyes wobble going through the thread! That's a great idea - I wish I'd thought of it! I shall update my sig with your square in a mo!

I think if we all aim for two squares for Smoky's blanket we should easily get to 63. For those of you who may have already done more than two, or who want to do more than two, perhaps any left over could be made into a cushion (s) to go with the blanket?

SARAHPECK - I can't keep up with you! No wonder you were too tired to log on! Well done.

Off now to update my sig!

  • morning folks, i've only just got my head in gear, went to bed with a headache and woke up with it!! feel a bit weedy today but better than yesterday, thanks for all your good wishes, they were really heartwarming. I'm honestly not ill often but I hate it when I am .
you guys have been really busy haven't you!! we'll soon have the both HTA and Smoky's blanket sorted. I drew a few designs on graph paper last nite, one with 'money saving expert ' in it, will try and knit it up and see how it looks.
Mioliere, thanks for your PM, I'll reply in a mo.
gonna try and do another HTA square today but have a pile of ironing to tackle.
catch up with y'all later!! ;-)

  • Hi all

Don't log on often or read the threads, but caught up with this one on Monday (no work), read through the whole thing and was inspired, its amazing what one simple thought will do.
I've done you 2 squares in crotchet and will do some more when I dig out some more wool.
Its great, its giving me a chance to try some fancy patterns and play around.
Have I missed where to send them or is that coming later and are we still doing 8" squares.
Both mine are in a gingery colour so will do for HTA
