LAINEY - thanks for the sig advice. I want to keep the running total of squares updated on it if I can!

Now that the bank holidays have gone (sigh) I have just emailed back to OECS the information they requested for our application to be able to send them squares. It looks as if we are now definitely The Wooligans because that's the name I gave them for our group!

I am just waiting for MSE Andrea to get back to me to tell me whether or not I can post the OECS addresses so that we can start sending our squares. They have several addresses but we will have to send all our Help the Aged squares to the same address, with a note of who we are and the square sizes, so that they do all get sewn together for the Wooligans first blanket!

Will update you as and when I get information.

  • Hope you get better soon Lainey

I've knitted another red square- I have lots of spare red DK wool lol! Here's a pic of the ones I've done so far:

I also knitted one for Smokey yesterday- also 8 inch square, glad that's what we are doing as I didn't check first lol! The wool is slightly 'fuzzy' which makes it nice and soft- but is machine wachable- I resisted using my favourite funky fur as it might look odd in the blanket lol!

I should finish my 2nd square for Smokey today or tomorrow... I'm also knitting squares for 2 more blankets, so shall have to do some of them soon too, my bf wants his blanket lol! I love knitting squares every evening as it's so relaxing, and it's great to be able to do it for a good cause and people who will appreciate it :)

So, just to be clear (I have read most of the thread but I've been been getting a bit confused)
It's 8" squares in warm colours for the Help The Aged blanket
8" squares in any colour for the Smokey blanket.
We'll sent the HTA squares to an OESC address to be posted when the moderators give the ok, mentioning that they are from The Wooligans Group
And the Smokey squares go to?
I'm sure that all this info is somewhere, but I'm easily lost!

jellybeans - I am getting more adventurous having started on plain stick then moved to knit a row purl a row and would love to know how to do a pattern like your stripes and star. Is it easy? could you post instructions or point me to a pattern? thanks!

Well, finished square number 2 and half way through square number 3 today! I am so impressed with everyone's efforts!

keep them coming folks. (ordered some of my favourite colours of wool for smokeys blanket and can't wait for it to arrive!)

Hi SEAKAY - it is confusing because this thread is sort of continually evolving! You are right in everything in your post apart from sewing up the squares for Smoky's blanket which LAINEY has very kindly offered to do. When we have enough we can pm her. OECS sew for various charities for the elderly so we can't ask them to sew SMOKY's blanket for us. We have decided if would be much nicer for SMOKY's blanket if we all chose our favourite colours for our squares - it would make it much more personal for her.

JELLYBEANS - there's nothing I can say but a great big WOW!! Your squares are fantastic and a brilliant colour, too. I love the colours you have chosen for SMOKY's blanket as well. Well done - you've truly put me to shame now!

Hi r.mac, I only started knitting again a few months ago (learnt it when I was a kid) and like doing plain knit for relaxation as it's so simple, and purl stitch when I'm feeling more adventurous! I'd love to be able to do more and to crochet. But yes the patterns are easy as they are just knit and purl stitches- the different stitches make the pattern appear in the square. I got them from lots of dishcloth patterns, here's a few links, first one has the star pattern on:

    http://knitalittle.tripod.com/id1.html

    http://www.knittingknonsense.com/index2.html

    http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/dishcloths.php

The only problem I had when starting to knit them is that you need to modify the pattern to make it 8 inch square (for my wool and tension I had to add a extra 4 stitches casting on- 2 on each edge of the border, and do a extra few rows top and bottom to increase the size of the border that way as well). The patterns are quite easy to knit as all odd rows you just knit across, and even rows you follow the pattern- eg k6, p7, k18, p7, k6 and you see the design appearing as you go along.

I made the diagonals pattern myself by drawing lots of boxes (the number of stitches cast on, by the number of rows needed to make 8 inches, and then colouring in the squares that I wanted to be knit stitch to make a border of 6 rows/stitches and the diagonals, and blank squares were purl stitch. Hope this makes sense! It just took a little modifying to make the squares the right size (I made 2 squares that are too small lol, but I'm keeping them as samples ;) )

Good luck and have fun knitting :D
