Well, I made a good start on the 8 inch square, but went wrong when I found it was too small and tried doing a crochet border. I never learn to crochet properly. Only a few stitches my sister taught me about 35 years ago (I don't even know what stitch I'm doing) . So, I don't know how to increase/decrease, or get round corners:eek: .
I'm going to try again though, and if it's still not right, then I'll get the knitting needles out instead. So, I'll get it done somehow:D

Just read this as I'm getting to a corner on something else I'm crocheting (got the bug now - am torn between this and my sewing machine!). I find an extra chain stitch in the corners keeps it nice and square. For instance, the one I posted a photo of earlier has 2 chains between each 3triples and 3 chains on the corner.

Don't know if that helps?
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Thanks Claire. It does help a lot. My corners are all rounded, as I hadn't done any extra chains - this is the problem with never learning how to crochet properly - I didn't even know that you could do extra chains between stitches:o
I can see how that would also give it that bit more stretch around a corner too. Thanks. I'll have another go, adding a chain or two when I get to the corners:T

    Hi everyone,

I have just found this thread and am in the process of trying to use up wool that I bought for various projects and never got round to doing. I'm in the middle of a crochet baby blanket which I hope to get finished soon. I'm sure I have a rust ball of DK wool somewhere I bought for a jumper so I'll get looking and will crochet it up for you.

Blankets for Help the Aged is a brilliant idea. :D

Hi everyone and welcome to EEYORERULES!

As I said yesterday, I counted, hopefully correctly, that we have 18 squares already and more in the pipeline. I hope to get my first one finished today! Sorry, 19 - I've just noticed SARAHPECK had finished another one! Well done, SARAH! I love the wool I found yesterday - I bought 100g ball of it and I'm doing a square in a stitch I found from a dishcloth pattern called 'Chinese Waves' which is really easy. I shall use up the rest of the wool with more adventurous stitches now I've got the tension and number of stitches right for an 8" square. The pattern needed an odd number of stitches so I have cast on 41 in DK wool on NO 8 (4mm) needles which has worked out at exactly 8" with my tension. It works out at 5 stitches per inch of knitting widthwise so I shall cast on 35 stitches for the 7" squares when I start them. I've just had a thought - what size square is everyone doing for SMOKY's blanket?

Anyway, I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and I will let you know as soon as I find out if I can post OECS addresses on here for posting the squares.

I've been avoiding this thread because I'm rubbish at knitting, but if everyone else is putting in the effort I ought to as well. :o

My knitting needles are in the attic (they haven't been used since ds2 was born almost eight years ago) but I'm going to send Mr Pink up to look for them later. Please will someone confirm what size the squares need to be?

Hi Jackie, Well done you and your ladies for all your Linus blankets:A

I am collecting the materials for my Linus pledge to do this year, but it will be a patchwork quilt. My youngest sister started me on this when my middle sister died suddenly a while ago. I will start when I have a suitable backing it must be smooth and soft, I have collected most of the fabric, animal prints, bright colours, balloon prints, teddy bears, dolls and anything suitable for a child.

    :T
    xx

Well done Pippa, my friend June is in the U.S. at the moment until Wednesday and she said she has bought 15 yards of material for around £10.00 to make some patchwork quilts with. She normally crochets them, and I knit, but she got the patchwork bug at Christmas and now theres no stopping her.
We have been Linus ladies for over two years now and most of the wool I have recycled from old jumpers the grandchildren have grown out of .I also have a little bin in a local shop where folk can drop off left over oddments of wool ,doesn't even have to be a full ball and the colours don't have to be matching. It's a great way to recycle bits and pieces.Sometimes I will even buy a handknit jumper from a charity shop just for the wool and unravel it .
I have also made some prem baby stuff for our local baby unit at the Medway Maritime Hospital as Radio Kent had an appeal for baby bits .Prem babies feel the cold so much and their stuff is so easy to make and take up no time at all. If there is any three ply in my bucket it makes cardi's and hats and bootees for them.I do love knitting and it keeps my hands mobile, and stops me falling asleep in front of the t.v.

PINK - I am using 3.75mm needles, but you can use any size so long as you make squares that are 8 x 8 (Until we get 63) the 7 x 7".

others are using 4mm needles so I would just go with what you have in the attic.

Good luck (and your attempt cannot be worse than my first one - it has a small ventilation circle in it so the person who gets it doesn't overheat!!!!!). I'm half way through my second square and it looks much more professional :D
