Hi Ann - yes, it's a great idea. I must try and start mine today. I nipped into Sainsbury's this morning and bought myself an Innocent Smoothie with a lovely red and cream checked hat on it with a label attached to it that explains the whole campaign. The hat is the perfect size for the drawing mannikin that sits on my desk. The rest of him looks very naked and cold now so I'm tempted to see if I can knit him an outfit for the winter! Then it made me think about doing some more for Christmas presents next year (I won't have time this year!). The mannikins are really cheap nowadays so it wouldn't cost much per present.

Anyway, back to reality. I have done a pair of mittens and have just started a STC hat which I will alternate with finishing off another handbag for a niece for Christmas.

    I'll update now.

The first figures are for the STC (Save the Children) hats and the second is for the (IS) Innocent Smoothie hats for Sainsbury's, the closing date for which was 17th October 2008 by which time they had received over 500,000 hats - that's more than 100,000 more than last year. As each one raises 50p that's over £250,000 raised for Age Concern! Our hats on here will raise £224 so please give yourselves a huge pat on the back! The hats will go on sale, each on a bottle of Innocent Smoothie, in Sainsbury's on 5th November - I wonder if any of us will recognise a hat we've made in our local branch?!

  • Hello ladies,
I have just read though your thread and I think you are going a fantastic job!! I know that there is a very high demand for preemie clothing as well as buriel outfits. I don't want to high jack your thread but I was just thinking that you might be interested in this charity

    www.bonniebabies.co.uk

They are a very small, non-profit charity that provide all the kind of items you have been knitting as well as items that they sew. My mother in law is a volunteer and I know that they need as much help as possible. There is a much bigger demand for the things they make than they can make at one time.

I hope nobody thinks I am rude for adding bonnie babies but they are such a worthwhile cause and the ladies that knit and sew for them work so hard. I was just thinking that if any ladies from here would like to help they would be really really apprceiative (sp!?)

    Many thanks,
    Purplegirl

Hi Purplegirl - welcome to you. You certainly aren't rude and you haven't hijacked the thread, so please don't think you have! I've just had a look at the lovely bonniebabies.co.uk site and will be more than happy to add it to charities we all knit for. The need for baby items will always be there so I'm sure we will all be pleased to help. There are some lovely patterns on the site. I don't sew (well, I can sew very basically but the results are not very good!) but I love to knit and crochet and we have some excellent knitters and crocheters on here. If you would like to join our Yahoo group (the link is on the first page of the thread) you will see that we post photos of our items on there. It's been a bit quiet there lately which is probably due to half-term and Christmas looming but we have lots of photos there.

    Thanks for posting.

Hi ladies - I now have a "small" pile of squares to send out -

    1) Can anyone tell me the postal address for loving hands - i did email last week but have since realised that maybe Lou is still not up to answering (Lou if you are reading this I hope you are getting along!!!)

    2) Do I need to be a member of the "Wooligans" to update my totals for squares for instance?

    3) Is the Sailor Hat simple and can anyone help me with a pattern

Ive just found a link to a simple blanket via here it looks easy enough so am gonna try it although if no one receives squares send a search party I may have got tangled up in wool ha ha (I am only a beginner and squares is about my limit although have done some "fluffy" scarves from eyelash wool etc )

By the way where do I send scarves / sailors hats to is that Loving Hands as well?

Thanks for your help girls - kind regards Jaqui xx
PS Some of my stash of squares will go off to Preemies UK - will send soon !!

    Hi Jaqui,
I have PM'd you with the address for L/H,
Yes the sailors hats and scarves go to L/H too.
The hat is not too hard to do this is the link for the pattern, or it is on the L/H site.
    www.bhkc.co.uk/data/knitting_for_charity_08.htm

There is a really simple blanket pattern posted on here somewhere its all done in garter stitch, on 4mm needles using DK yarn.

    CORNER TO CORNER BLANKET

    Cast on 4 sts
    knit 2 rows
next row: K1, inc in next st, k to end
next row: K1, inc in next st, k to end
Repeat these 2 rows until required width, then
next row: K1, K2 tog, k to end
next row: K1, K2 tog, k to end
    continue until 4 sts remain,
    cast off.

Is it the one you have found?

Hi F1 - here's the link with the address for Loving Hands http://www.lovinghands.org.uk/contact.htm. You don't need to be a member of the Wooligans to add your squares but we are not counting the squares; I don't know why - I think it's because we were working on the blankets that the squares were originally being made for and, once they were completed, we got going on the baby items and forgot to total the squares. Please post your totals and we'll start to add them to our update.

As for the sailors' hats - I'll have a look for one tomorrow but perhaps those who have already made one could post a link?

    Hi Kathy
Can you update me with 1 SAILORS HAT please.

I have just started the moss stitch preemie baby cardi, it is sooo tiny, it looks like it is for a doll.

I am off to West Sussex to see my DGD's on Saturday, ooo I cant wait to see them. I will do as I did last time we went down and take enough yarn to make 2 or 3 scarves, I did one on the way down and one coming back last time. It makes the journey go quicker when I am knitting.
While I am down there I will pop in to Sainsburys to have a look at the smoothie hats, and yes I will buy one, to do my bit for Age Concern, probably wont drink it though I cant stand smoothies :o

    Hi shaz,
That looks a much easier pattern than the one I used from the Sailors Society, I will do that one next time.
    Thanks
